A Relaxing Sunday in Sydney

I’m sitting inside the Menzies hotel, waiting for my shuttle to the airport. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. While I’m excited to arrive in Cairns tonight, I have to journal about what I did yesterday.

Yesterday I forced myself to sleep in. It was Sunday anyhow, so everything in Sydney was lax- not closed like Europe though. I made my way by train to Olympic park, Telstra stadium, where I had my first look at a pro rugby match.

Lucky for me there was a nice gentleman who I sat next to that explained to me a few specifics of the game. I thought, why are those guys without the ball just standing there? Why don’t they block for the teammate, like football! “Cause that’s sheparding, mate.” I heard from my rugby teacher, who started the game decked out in wests tigers colors, and by the last 20 minutes of the game- when the wests tigers were losing by 30 points (which is a pretty good amount in rugby), he put on a sweatshirt that read bulldogs! Pretty funny, and everyone around us thought so too. There was a cute little girl in front of us who had been cheering “Go Bulldog People” all match, and when she looked back at this guy, she had a look on her face like he metamorphed from a tiger into an actual bulldog. -The priceless moment of the match-

And the guys behind us were also confused…they just weren’t cute like the little bulldog cheerleader. In all, everyone was really nice and I’ve come to see that everyone in Australia is friendly. I’d even say that they are so far, stereotypically nicer even than Canadians, who are the mellowest humans on the planet.

After the game, I took the train to city hall and walked to the aquarium. Yes, nemo was there. I was trying my hardest not to care for nemo, but there were even signs in the aquarium asking, “can you find nemo and his friends?”
Besides those little dorks, there was THE LARGEST sting ray and turtle I’d ever seen, ah, fair dinkum. The sting ray was about the size of a California king size comforter- I’m serious, I even tried to walk around to another side to make sure that it wasn’t a bending of the glass. The turtle was just huge. Not like a VW, but as big as the biggest one I’ve seen on land. Mom, do you remember during one of dad’s hospital parties at the zoo we had the chance to see two turtles doing something that caused them to moan? Well, this one was that big. Ahem.

I walked around the rest of the evening, enjoying a Lucky Beer at some restaurant that means coin de l’amour in Malay. The food was terrible, though. To my surprise. But the waitress was nice enough to switch my plate of bones (supposed to be snapper) for some prawns. Can you remember the last time I did that?
Lucky for this city, I went for a nice lunch at the Shangri-la hotel today- but I’ll have to save that story for tomorrow’s log. Speaking of lucky, the beer was shaped like a Buddha. Really cool. And I knew that I was getting sucked in to the tourist trap with that one, but didn’t care. The “designer” beer was full and it did the trick. Plus I rubbed the buddha’s belly in hopes that it will bring luck and fortune, as promised on the other side of the beer.

Returned to my room to make it an early, relaxing night.

That was a big one...
' Love the rugby story. In the Windies we tried to learn (appreciate) cricket. Hmmm? Wish I had a cricket story as good as your story about rugby!
