Xela, How goes it?!?

Well, now I’ve been here for a month and can’t believe how fast it’s gone by. Every day I am occupied which is nice. I continue to meet new and interesting people which is one of the great things about this job. However, I am also beginning to realize that after meeting these people, they will soon leave making me a little more reluctant to really be “best buds” with any of them. One girl, named Ambika, is an intern here and she is really cool. She’s from Philly but was born in India. She’ll be here until the end of August, so I feel that she’ll be a good friend.

I’ve also been hanging out with the guys from the office, Boni and Jaime, who are puro guatemaltecos! They are fun and we watch futbol together, play dominoes (which I love now), and go see music. I also hangout with Kriss Evelyn on a daily basis which is really nice and she has been a huge help since I got here.

On Thursday night I went to an Indian restaurant with some of the students and then we came back here to my apartment where we proceeded to drink a lot. Other than that, not much happened this week. On Friday I set up an International Dinner/Potluck for the students and teachers. It was a big success with about 30-35 people showing up. However, the majority of the people didn’t bring anything so we ran out of food fast.

Saturday we hiked La Muela (The Molar) which is a huge volcanic rock deposit just outside of Xela. Its about a 1-1.5 hour hike and completely worth the view. You can see practically the entire city of Quetzaltenango. We got back around 1 pm and I had a few people over to watch the World Cup game. By the way, the World Cup is CRAZY down here. At 9 am, 11 am, and 2 pm everybody practically slows down or stops what they are doing and listens to or watches the game (Brazil the favorite here).

After watching the game, Ambika, Drew (TX), and Nate (NC) came over and we went to the market to get stuff for dinner. We cooked steak fillets, mashed potatoes, and garlic bread and it was delicious! Afterwards my friend Dylan (Vancouver, Canada) came over to play some music. He’s awesome and he only has 10% of his vision!! He plays guitar and harmonica and can sing (and harmonize) very well. We just sat and switched songs back and forth all night long.

Sunday we went to Fuentes Georginas (again) and everytime I return there I like it less and less. It’s a nice place to visit once in a while for an hour or so, but every month for a couple hours gets very old and dull. That night Kriss came over to watch "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" but I couldn't find it on the TV.

This past week I have been really sick. At first it was that my nose was congested, then my head and body was sore and I would wake up shivering for hours at night. Yesterday (Wednesday) it turned into stomach problems...
