Airlie Beach
The night started out with dinner and laughs Today I sit under my annexe, close to the roads edge in the name of finding a small window of opportunity to be a part of cyber space. I'm in a town (if you could call it that) named Lucinda, north of Ingham. This place is so small that it only has this caravan park, a pub and a 'general store' which I can tell you has nothing much in it general or otherwise. With no consistent mobile, internet reception or TV reception, I figured I would while-away my days working however my flyers are constantly being pulled down and thrown in the bin by a guest so I'm told by the owners of the caravan park. With very little work for 4weeks now, I thought I would cheer myself up in this lonely town by hanging at the beach only to find that its so close to mangroves and this is a beach that all year round is best not used for any recreational activity due to crocodiles. In the desperate attempt to stay somewhere for longer than 6days and find a base to call home for awhile and get some work it would appear that it is not here.
Airlie Beach
The night ended on the dance floor Tomorrow I leave for Mission Beach with some hope in my heart that I find a place to 'stand still' and maybe even meet someone under the age of 60!
Previous to this non-adventurous place was Townsville, Bowen and Airlie. Airlie Beach is the place you want to go for some good food, lazing by the lagoon with a bunch of other tourists, and of course a whole lot of night-life for the young at heart. Good fortune had it that Anja, who I met in Eungella was also in Airlie and with my close friend Kerry up from Adelaide to visit me too, I was forceably dragged out each night to any and all the places around town that result in me crying silently on the inside. Our first night we met Debra from Brisbane, a very funny and entertaining women who joined us in our escapades around town. The nightclubs were filled with young drunk party goers all singing along to the tunes of the latest hits that I know nothing about as I never listen to the radio. As I was once or twice told that I was no fun anymore that I have a boyfriend, I
Townsville
Me at the top of Castle Mountain with Magnetic Island in the background reminded all that I have never enjoyed partying every night for a week and that on the occassions that I have, it usually involved a group of friends, some good converstation, some dancing and maybe alittle harmless perving, none of which was hugely on offer in this town. To make things more entertaining was the fact we stayed in the van park within the backpackers Nomads on the main strip. With ammenities that could only compete with facilities seen at a music festival, we were constantly cringing at the thought of having to do the simple task of showering. Luckily we both carried with us anti-bacterial handwash to save the day from the filth we were exposed to. With all that negative nightlife & accomodation bashing being said, I loved having one of my closest friends with me to share plenty of laughs with and enjoy the company of girls, which has been severly lacking on this trip. To add to this I got to spend some time with Hayley and Brett, friends from Adelaide who live in Airlie now, and after having dinner in their lovely home overlooking the whole coastal region I decided that if I lived in
Townsville
Another sunset view their home I would love Airlie far more than I did.
The day after Kerry left I picked up Steve from Proserpine airport and headed for Bowen. Like so much of the coast of QLD at this time of year, the 7 caravan parks were booked out with grey nomads and Steve and I were forced to share a site with an existing caravan on it. We left the next day, arriving in Townsville, the metropolis of North Qld apparently. This "city" is small and curious. From the view of castle mountain, on one side is the barren landscape and city/surburban sprawl and on the other side is the view of the gorgeous coast that stretches out to the huge and magnificent looking Magnetic Island. We spent our days settling in, walking The Strand in search of good juice bars and good food, and nights curled up in Iris. I also met Steves Brother Fred and his wife, and his parents as they were all visiting at Freds holiday farm. They were all so welcoming and lovely, with Steves dad the great story teller, laughs were had by all.
So now here I sit, a little lonely after a couple
