After driving back through Ingham and visiting the local charity shop (love op-shop shopping – but I miss doing it with you Nici!), we headed on to Lucinda (as recommended by the ladies in the op shop). This little seaside town, set in amongst all the sugarcane fields, is best known for the world’s longest bulk sugar-loading jetty. The jetty is actually 6km long, allowing enormous carrier ships to dock and be loaded up! There isn’t much else to see in Lucinda (aside from a cool little open-air gym next to the beach) so we didn’t stay long before heading on to Cardwell. We had stopped in Cardwell for fish & chips with Tracey and Jason a few weeks earlier as it lies at the half-way mark between Townsville and Mundoo Skydivers. It’s a quiet uncomplicated ... read more

Today I sit under my annexe, close to the roads edge in the name of finding a small window of opportunity to be a part of cyber space. I'm in a town (if you could call it that) named Lucinda, north of Ingham. This place is so small that it only has this caravan park, a pub and a 'general store' which I can tell you has nothing much in it general or otherwise. With no consistent mobile, internet reception or TV reception, I figured I would while-away my days working however my flyers are constantly being pulled down and thrown in the bin by a guest so I'm told by the owners of the caravan park. With very little work for 4weeks now, I thought I would cheer myself up in this lonely town by ... read more

We spent a lovely week at Cania Gorge where it was rather cool of a night time, reaching 3.8 degrees one night and not much more the rest of the time. They had a campfire going each night so we all got around that and had a few drinks and a couple of nights some of us placed dampers for everyone in it which was a great success. We also placed our potatoes and veggies in there a couple of nights, delicious. After Cania Gorge we ventured to Rockhampton where we stayed for 3 nights, nothing much here as we just did some shopping and washing to break the trip. After leaving Rockhampton we drove to Mackay for the day to have a new bike bracket fitted to the 5th Wheeler as the old one almost ... read more

Our next port of call was Weipa, home of the largest deposit of aluminium containing Bauxite in the world (allegedly) . So we just had to go for a mine tour. When I think of mines, I think of underground, but here they just scrape it off the top. They are very eco friendly though, and remove the topsoil first, then they replace it and reseed when they have finished, and in a few short years you would never have known they had been there. Saw lots of lovely big trucks and other mine vehicles. They ship the bauxite to Gladstone, south Queensland where it is processed into Alumina, and then into Aluminium. They also ship to other parts of the world, probably including Hungary - for them to then release the sludge into the Danube! ... read more

The diving this weekend was a mixed bag, but definitely the best experience I've had at Pelorus. My first dive was quite tiring. My dive buddy and I, both experienced rescue divers, started out against the current. We went with a dive master nicknamed "biggles", and we were exploring a new site called "coral gardens". The site is aptly named since it is a relatively shallow expanse of branching coral, anemones, and sponges. It's one of the more diverse sites I've seen invertebrate wise. After about 30 minutes against the current, we changed directions and started going back towards the boat, but the current changed direction on us. So we got stuck paddling against a very strong current back to the boat. After 40 minutes at depth, my buddy and I were tired and low on ... read more

I took my second diving safari adventure with remote area dive this weekend. I wasn't planning on going back out so soon, but I got a special discount price since two people had dropped out. The weather on the first day was perfect, and we managed to get 3 dives in although one of the motors on the boat blew out. The motor trouble delayed us the entire weekend, and we ended up having 4pm lunches, and 9pm dinners. But whatever, we were fed and watered, and got in 5 dives. Whoa Buddy There weren't as many DMs (Dive Masters) in the water this time, so I had the opportunity to navigate on my own with just a buddy. This was the first time I had navigated a site solo, let alone led/monitored a buddy. As ... read more
