Its quite a drive to Ayers Rock from this place so we were on a tight driving schedule really so were unable to explore this crazy place- but what I saw was crazy enough for me I think!!!!!!........................................................................................................................

Coober Pedy- the nearest towns on both sides are probably 8hrs away! This place has the highest amount of different nationalities (45ish I think) with a population of 3000ish!!! But i'm sure there are a few that are there illegally..................................!!!

Not an attractive place what so ever- in fact the Lonely Planet describes it looking like "the end of the World"!!! which I thought was a classic and sums it up perfectly- dusty, hot, humid dessert town!!!!!!! Mad Max III was filmed here........................ It is famous for its Opals and majority of the world's Opals come from here!!!! People live underground because of the extreme heat, reaching i think 50 degress C! All the cafes and churches etc are underground- I'm gutted I didnt get to go into them a have a nosey- you could also go into a few houses!!!!!!! Really annoyed now I didnt buy an Opal too but after the night drive the night before we were worried about the time and also wanted to reach Ayers Rock for sunset........................................

We saw so many dead kangas in the road and by the roadside with huge vultures or maybe they were eagles feeding off them!!! Those birds are huge- no photos of them unfortunately as the Britz on Tour scared then off when ever we got close!

We passed a white cross on the roadside and demanded to Darren we turn back.................. This was quite scary but I couldnt miss the opportunity....... it was a memorial for a guy who had been murdered at that spot! Darren's granny had given me a book to read about that English guy (Peter Falconi) shot dead on the same highway (higher up than we were going though) and seeing this made it all that more real...............................................

There were also a huge amount of cars abandoned or burnt out!!! We stoppped at one and the car doors were left open as well as the boot and there were clothes and books scattered all over the dessert land...................... whats the story with these cars? Have the owners been murdered? Have they broken down? Not sure if any of you have seen Wolf Creek? But thinking about it if you broke down you wold have to get a lift or help from the first person who stopped as you might not see anyone for hours- you have no choice!!! Some of these sickos actually follow you from petrol stations.......... with the English guy, a guy flagged him over saying there was smoke from his exhaust, he got out to look and bang- shot dead! Although others say different............ ANYWAY sorry to panic you slightly............... we were fine, but it fasinates me thinking about it! Just trying to create the atmosphere!!!!!!!!

So we then hit Northern Territory- home to the Aboriginals................................ gosh the flies were unreal!!!! Claire you would actually die- I know you and flies!!! It was unbearable!

After the 8 hr drive we made it to the absolutley lovely campsite at Ayers Rock in time for the sunset too!!!! Being the pro travellers we are now we managed to pay only for 2 at both the campsite and the entrance for the national park to Ayers Rock and the Ulgas!!! Naughty I know!

On the drive to the sunset Vix was driving and we came across an Abo in the road trying to flag us down, with his yute parked by the roadside!!!! I remembered my coversation with my brother "Stop for no one Woosh- keep on driving!!! There are some wierd buggers out there!!!" so we carried on driving!!!! Hoping that if we ever needed roadside assistance they hadn't spoken to my brother!!!!!!!!

When Ayers rock came into view I could not believe its pressence!!!! It looked like it was painted onto the skyline....................it was unreal and I was so glad we had made this journey- as it wasn't on the cards until the boys suggested it................. I'm sure you have all heard about the rock changing colours during sunset and indeed it does and everytime it becomes more beautiful than the last..................................................................................................................
