Well, the flights went as well as we could have hoped. We´re on the ground safely in a great neighbourhood in the Providencia area of Santiago. Thanks to Matt and Mel Cherevaty for recommending a nice little hotel on a tree-lined street loaded with interesting shops and restaurants (and happy belated 4th birthday to Coleman Cherevaty too).

Even with everything going very smoothly, it´s a tiring day. We dropped our bags at the hotel, got changed, and went for a walk to a nearby park loaded with scuptures. Pauline and Abbey are resting in our room, and I´m just back from a tour to see what´s in the neighbourhood. Bought tickets for the subway, and some fruit at the local supermarket. Sadly, almost nothing different from the produce section of the store in Thompson. I sort of expected fresher, better, and more. Not even fresh blueberries, which are supposed to be in season here. Please check the labels of the blueberries in your local market. If they are from Chile, then it´s clear that you´re getting them and we are not. ¡Quel Lastima!

Here´s something you don´t see everyday back home: Serving staff seem to have the ability (and regularly exercise it) to bypass a queue to help people out. First in the airport, a guy working a wicket to collect the entry fee from us gringos pulled a mother with a baby in a stroller to the front of the line from the very back, and then at the supermarket, staff from the bakery helped two (very) elderly women get a few items, then brought them right to the front of the checkout line to pay. I like it.

We´re looking forward to meeting the Ana and Ricardo Rodriguez for dinner tonight.

Cheers.

Earthquake?
Did you miss the earthquake in Chile? News said it was a 6.8 centred off the coast from Concepion. Not terribly close to Santiago, but I'm curious if you felt it...
