We are a family of three currently on our biggest adventure. We will be traveling through parts of South America for three months, exploring the culture, food, language and anything else that comes our way. Starting in Chile, then Peru, Ecuador and Suriname.

The Wrap on Suriname

We knew this would happen. I've been planning to put together and share some information and observations on our two weeks in Suriname. But once we got home, we got really busy, and it has been very hard to get to do the blog. To make up for the delay, we're delivering an extra load of photos with this blog entry. Suriname is on the South American continent, but belongs to the carribean by culture. The mix of cultures is amazing, and it frankly took a while to get used to everybody speaking dutch (although when the Surinamese speak English to you, they sound like they could be from Jamaica). We had the pleasure of staying with our friend Astrid MacDonald outside the capital city of Parimaribo. Astrid had this home built on a large lot, ... read more

Sweatin' to the Oldies

Well perhaps not sweating to the oldies at the moment, but definitely sweating a lot. In addition to the very North American behavior of moving from air conditioned building to air conditioned building, we have adopted a few Surinamese practices for handling the heat. To Wit: two, or sometimes three showers per day to cool off, men going shirtless around the home in the evening (not particularly pretty, but effective), and women going, shall we say 'alfresco', under their summer dresses. Yesterday we used the pool at a downtown hotel for a few hours, and it saved us. Today, we stayed put and did a few things around Astrid's house in the morning and are checking out a mall with an internet cafe this afternoon. The Carnival of Wellness Later we are going to watch a ... read more

Today we went right into the heat of the day to get to an amazing butterfly garden near the city. This place breeds exotic butterflies for sale to butterfly gardens in the US and Eurpope. Pretty neat place. Unfortunately, I can't share photos of it because we just bought a new memory card for the camera, and the card with the photos is in Pauline's purse, and not here with me in the camera. (foiled again). The one photo we have on the new card is of the sign for an english bookstore. I am sharing it because it is going to be our saviour here. You see, Abbey ran out of english books to read some time ago, and she doesn't have a lot to do on her own when we're around Astrid's house in ... read more

Still touring around Parimaribo. Our host, Astrid must have pulled in a lot of favors, because everywhere we go, there is somebody who has been lined up to feed us. Yesterday her sister and brother in law took us to the pool at a local fitness club, then to a Javanese restaurant. Lovely. Abbey and their daughter Priscilla are cooking plans for a sleepover this week. Whoever called this the 'rainy season' was WAY OFF BASE. It has been hot, and muggy for four days, and at times opressive. It dipped down to 28 Celsius by 8:30 tonight, and that's about as bearable as it gets. We considered changing flights to come back a few days early but decided to just 'suck it up buttercup', and see all we can here before we leave. Am writing ... read more

Sorry for the recent radio silence. The travel day to Suriname was a long one, and mostly without problems. Maybe more on that later. The main thing is that we are on the ground, and visiting with our friend Astrid MacDonald, who lives south of Parimaribo. We met Astrid 15 years ago when Sue Holloway and the late Murray Kocis asked us to host her through an organization called Canadian Crossroads. She lived with us for three months, and we thoroughly tortured her with various activities in the cold fall weather. Now it's her turn for revenge. Despite this supposedly being the rainy season, we haven't had any appreciable rain in the last two days, and have instead been met with unbelievable, unrelenting heat. Our first full day, yesterday, started nice enough, but around nine in ... read more

Just back into Quito from the rainforest. Will be posting a more detailed blog when time and bandwidth permit (the connection speed at the hotel right now could charitably be described as glacial). For now, let us just say that the trip to the Napo Wildlife Centre was teriffic. Among many other things, we saw huge centipedes, Tucans, Parrots, Monkeys, Anacondas, bats that catch fish, trees that shed their bark twice per year, and ants that farm a type of fungus, which they then eat. We also spotted the president of Paraquay, Fernando Lugo, who visited the centre. I was operating the blow gun in the cultural centre for the community of Kichwa Añangu when the president and his entourage entered the building, trailed by personal security and armed Ecuadoran military. The security guys took one ... read more

Two housekeeping items: 1) The new blog on Day 2 in the Galapagos is up, but because I worked on it over a few days it appears a few entries down the list. Some people missed Day 1 for this reason, and I thought I´d let you know. 2) Abbey has a message for her friends who are commenting (This includes you Cassidy Hartigan): We love your messages, and she really misses you too. Cheers... read more

This may be the only good internet connection that we will have for a long time, so I´m going to give you an extra blog to hold you over. Read it slowly and it will last longer. The schedule had us two days in Baños, then to Quito with a day trip to Pupillacta but after a half day here, we called HQ and switched it to three days here. Good call. We realized after walking around that our itinerary had a bit too much city, and not quite enough visits to small towns, and Baños fits the bill nicely. The hotsprings in Baños have long been valued by people in the region for their health benefits, (the full name of the town is ¨Healthy water of Baños¨) and to add to its appeal, a image ... read more

Rural Ecuador tour

Yesterday, we drove with our guide Edison from Cuenca to Baños with a stop at Alausi to ride down the ´Devil´s Nose´ on a train. The drive was long, but gave us an excellent look at some of Ecuador´s rural agricultural areas. Stunning views, and lots to see. Compared to the tour from Cuzco to Puno in Peru, the folks in Ecuador seem better off than their rural Peruvian neighbours. This is of course a relative term, as none of us would find it easy to survive on the incomes that are available here. The minimum wage in Ecuador is $240USD per month, slightly higher than is available in Peru. A teacher here starts at $250 per month, and can get a raise in two years if they continue studying. One saving grace here is that ... read more
