Sneak Peak - Living Room
Phil rocking out on Guitar Hero in our new living room. This is about half of the roof. Windows face out to the street. Walt and I went to a party last Saturday (a week ago today) with a bunch of the teachers from my school. It was at Ana and Ismael's house. It was a "Cinco de Mayo" (Mexican holiday) celebration but about a week after May 5th...
Anyways, we had never seen their apartment until that night. As soon as I walked in, I loved it. It has a very large main room with lots of space. They painted one of the walls a deep blue to give life to the otherwise white apartment. The kitchen was huge (about three times the size of our current kitchen) and it had its own washer and dryer. There were two bedrooms (used to be 3 but they knocked out a wall to make a length-wise-long spare bedroom. There were also 2 bathrooms - one being an ensuite in the master bedroom. The nice thing about the bathrooms is that there were drawers and cabinets like a real bathroom at home. Honduran apartments usually only have a pedestal sink and then shelving elsewhere. The master room also has a walk-in-closet. The closet in the spare room is very large as well. Everything is furnished. It

We had an adult pinata on the roof comes with bedding, dishes, furniture, etc. The only downfall to the apartment is a double bed instead of a king (I'm in love with our king bed) and the lack of a balcony, but it does have a great rooftop.
The rooftop is unfinished so it's a little scary that there's no bars or railings at the edges. As long as you stay away from the edges (it's a HUGE rooftop so that's not hard to do) then it's great. There's also plenty of spaces upstairs to hang my hammock swing I haven't been able to hang yet this year.
Since Ana and Ismael have decided to leave their contract at the school, they won't be here next year. We asked how much they paid and it was $600/month plus $40 maintenance fee and about $25 electricity. Well, Walt and I currently pay $550/month plus $10 water plus about $25 electricity. So this was looking like a $80 increase on what we're paying. The school gives us $600/month towards our housing so I didn't want to go any higher that we already were.
We decided to call their landlady and found out the apartment is actually owned

There's a great 360 degree view of the city from up there. by the superintendent of the school (of course it is!) but this lady managed it. Well, the lady then told me she had heard great things about me and what I had done musically for the school and so she was more than happy to accommodate us. We were able to bring the price down to $550 with no problems, so our $80 increase was only $30 more per month for an apartment that is twice as big and twice as nice!
Ana and Ismael move out on June 3rd. We're going to be moving in June 6th. The only trouble is that I leave June 2nd to head to El Salvador to catch my flight to Peru. I get possession of my new car (bought from one of the other teachers that is leaving - a 98 Honda Civic) next Friday, so we've asked both Ana and Ismael and the landlady if it's okay that we bring over some boxes to store in the spare room for a few days before so that Walt doesn't have as much to move over on his own, once I leave. We'll save the valuables like clothing and such for when Walt moves over, but we'll take over our plants, dishes, cat stuff, household cleaning stuff, etc. beforehand.
It's about a 5 minute walk to school instead of 2, but my windows will no longer have a view of the high school directly across the street, and I'll be able to host more parties or events, like having my book club ladies over for dinner/discussion.
It's all happened very fast but I'm really excited about it. This apartment has never truly felt like home (I described it to mom as house-sitting a friend's place while they're on vacation) and this place is so much closer to what an apartment back home would be like (only WAY cheaper!). It'll be nice, once I get back from Peru, to have a few days to unwind, unpack, then repack for Canada. Wish I were able to stay longer in our new place, but I'm super excited about my 5 weeks in Canada as well! 😊
One week left of school and then it's off to Peru. Can't wait for this journey and then the other journey in our new apartment ahead.
I'll write more about the car next weekend once I get it!

YAY!!! So many exciting things are happening for you! I'm so glad. School is almost over, and summer is nearly here and you have many wonderful things coming your way. What are you doing in Peru? Things are starting to get exciting for us too. We're just starting to look for an apartment in Ecuador and making plans for heading down there. As of now we fly out August 11th and start teaching August 20th. I think it's going to be great!!! Anyway, I can't wait to hear about your Peru plans!
