Wednesday started off real early (for us.) We managed to get out of the hotel by 8 am and did a "walkabout" around the neighborhood called the rocks. We ended up at a little place called the Gumnut cafe. It was a really old, built in the 1800's. The backyard was converted into an eating area courtyard. We stayed inside because it rained earlier and was damp. The food was pretty good. Jason and I are sticking to tea here cuz getting cream is tough to say the least. Even starbucks doesn’t have it. After breakfast we went down to the ferry docks and took a Harbour cruise that also included entry to the Taronga Zoo. While waiting for the ferry we walked down to the opera house. pretty impressive place when you're standing beside it.

The ferry stops at 5 different places in the Harbour, letting you depart and explore as you please. The zoo is really cool, cuz it’s on a really big hill, you start at the top and work your way down. To get to the top you take a 5 minute gondola ride.

The first thing we saw when we got off the gondola
Canada's BearCanada's BearCanada's Bear

Canada's entry on the walk of bears
was the koalas. These guys are cool when they move. Koala’s basically wake up to scratch themselves and eat, then go back to sleep. We spent about 5 minutes with them in their pen; unfortunately we weren’t able to hold them (that’ll come later.) After we left the pen one of them decided to get active and chase the people who were next out of the pen.

From the Koala’s we went and saw some kangaroo’s, platypus, echidna, bears, giraffes, one really busy Tasmanian devil and the usual zoo folk. We walked through a wallaby enclosure. Spent a couple of hours at the zoo, and then were off on the boat to Darling Harbour to see the Australian Maritime Museum.

The museum has been the only free thing here so far, as everything is kind of a tourist trap, and expensive. The museum was interesting, with lots of info on the original explorers, and a really big section on World War II.

By the end of the museum we were all tired and crashed back at the hotel (after a 30 minute walk through downtown.)

More tomorrow…

Love the koalas! And how neat is it that Canada has a bear on the 'walk of bears"? :D I think my favourite picture in this set has to be the giraffe enjoying the view. I wonder if he can hear the operas? He could be a Pavarotti fan! XXOO :D
