A BLOG BY BRETTO
Well here we are again at this most sacred time of the year, the hang over capital of the world, you could even call it the mecca for beer drinkers. You guessed it - Oktoberfest, Munich( Munchen). This years run on team consisted of Gunny aka“G doggy dog” (special yell out to you bro hope ya got home safe) and code for the minute “S doggy dog” who stealthily flew in for the weekend and put in a 'stellar' performance, “K1” and “K2” also in code for the moment to protect their identities, Jacqueline, and of course the “captain”, myself.
To start the weekend we arrived at lunch time on Saturday after an organised rendezvous at the Tryp Hotel and struggled to find a beer tent that still had its doors open. But after some precision reconnaissance work from G dog and myself, we found ourselves a perch in the beer garden of the almighty Lowenbrau tent where we ordered the first of many steins of lager. The good times rolled all day till eventually we lost G dog and K2 and I found a way into a random tent which I still can't remember
the name of, and danced the night away to such Bavarian classics as
“take me home country road” “the prossit song” “schwim, schwim, schwim” and numerous others that only Germans would understand. All great to dance too. And thats all I remember from day 1.
(NOTE FROM JACQ - Actually, by some miracle, Bretto found us a way inside the Lowenbrau tent through an unmanned exit door and it was actually S Dog, K1, Bretto and myself that danced the night away on the tables. K2 was off on the rides with Gunny. Shows how much Bretto remembers!).
Day 2 started a bit shabby with K2 and G Dog getting about 2 hours sleep each. So walking arm in arm, we supported each other into the Hofbrau tent for a 9am kick off to make sure we had a table. Our dedication payed off and we kept our table til closing time at 11.30pm that night. With pretzel in hand and a pocket full of cigars we were ready for the days debauchery. The magically sunny day (not that we saw any) was filled with roasted half chickens, pork knuckles, 'little sleeps' on bench seats shall we call
them, steins, steins, more steins, and a rollercoaster ride that flipped my already full belly upside down numerous times much to everyones glee. Dan from Croatia and his friends Pauly and Sarah had also rolled into town for a guest appearance and stayed in the team for the next two days. The day ended the way any great day on the booze should! With a late night kebab from the Egyptian bloke on the corner. They were that great that I thought I would delight myself with two of those little lucky dip parcels of joy!
(NOTE FROM JACQ - Bretto was very nearly kicked out when he fell asleep on the bench, some American girls tried to steal my hat but I (diplomatically) got it back, S Dog and K1 'chatted' with some cute boys, Benny the lion (on top of Gunny's hat) was the star attraction, and Bernie our beer wench was attentive all day! But Lowenbrau is still my favourite tent even though the Hofbrau is legendary.).
Day 3 consisted of a tribute to the wonders of Oktoberfest with more steins in the beer garden of the very famous Hippodrom tent. Prices were a little
more expensive there but the weiss (wheat) beers were just what the doctor ordered. After a few quick ones S dog was 'gone' again and having the time of her life! The pork knuckles, chickens, and meat balls were rolled out once again for breakfast/lunch and all was good. Soon after Dan and Pauly rolled in to join in the festivities once again. Showing good form from all involved (after a bit of stopping and starting from K2 and Jacq), we batted through until stumps at 11.30 pm. We ended the night with a celebratory foot long bratwurst hot dog. The foot long bratwurst has become the customary closing event for us at Oktobefest now (that's right, 2 years in a row and we already have 'traditions' to follow!).
(NOTE FROM JACQ - I nearly didn't make it through the third day. Had to have a little sleep on the grassy hill (along with about a hundred others) to regroup but am pleased to report that I made it all the way and by the end of the night was having an awesome time).
So to recap - the beer flowed “on” everyone, the smiles never left any
ones faces, the time was epic, Benny the lion was the only casualty (R.I.P. Benny), and sitting here writing this blog three days after the fact, i've come to realise.... I think I'm still pissed!
So in the words of Johnny Drama........
“VICTORYYYYYYYYY”
(NOTE - much better photos to follow once identities no longer need to be protected)
