hi! just finished my first four days in the school. Spanish lessons last week were really good, but very intense and tiring! I can understand loads more than before I came but am not great at speaking yet, although I still have plenty of time. My host family are great, I live in a huge house, with at least 6 bathrooms and a maid who keeps moving my stuff around, it took me 3 days to find my other trainers. My host mum is called nana and is a champion bowler, and teaches it. My host dad is called freddie, and likes to talk alot! The other volunteers are great, i arrived at the same time as an American called Eric, and we have stuck together. loads of them are leaving on sat, and 9 new ones have arrived so its all change this week, and there are only 2 of us left in my school, so i need to pretend i know what im doing! the kids are really sweet and like to give you lots of hugs and kisses. i am teaching first and second grade - 5-7 year olds, some are really bright, and others don't even know numbers 1-10 which is interesting... the food so far has been alright, i get fruit salad and bread for breakfast, and then jsut sandwiches at the school and my main meal at home with the family. there are really into rice and potatoes, usually together. the worst meal was eggy spaghetti with peruvian hotdogs, or rice and baked beans lol, but some were ok. there are some seriously amazing cakes here, i have eaten far too much already, but its amazing, and chocolatey and soo good! the weather tends to be warm and sunny in the morning, and then cloudier, cooler and a bit rainy in the afternoon. Arequipa centre is a cool place, its really busy and modern, completely different from the communities we teach in, where most the kids live in one room breeze block houses, and quite a few have to work before/after school. I'm going to Colca Canyon this weekend so hopefully will get some pics up soon. there is one good computer with decent internet, whcih all the volunteers share so dont know how often i will be able to get on. hope everyone is well x
