Delicious Belgian Waffles
I went for the one in the middle with strawberries, bananas, and chocolate syrup. Well, I made it! After all that traveling, I made it to Brussels last Friday. The past three days here have been full of unpacking, exploring the city, and meeting the other interns, all of whom I love! Rachel, who is also an intern at USEU (US Mission to the European Union), and I have an apartment in the chic Ixelles area of Brussels. We can see the European Parliament Building and the Cinquantenaire Arch from the front windows of our third floor apartment. Though the view is great, it's quite a trek up the 6 flights of stairs we have to climb to get up to our apartment.
We're in such a great area, and Brussels is so compact, that we've found we can pretty much walk anywhere we need to go, and we pretty much have. We've already made a couple trips to the Grand Place to eat delicious Belgian waffles and see Mannekin Pis. We've found our way to the Mission and the Parc de Bruxelles, visited the Botanical Gardens, and climbed the Cinquantenaire Arch. In addition, we have unfortunately found that "the best frites in Brussels" are located at a little food stand only two blocks
Mannekin Pis
The symbol of Brussels. from our apartment. That can't turn out good. Luckily though, every time we get some we have to climb those 6 flights of stairs to get back to our apartment. We also have discovered many of the great beers of Belgium. Oh, and we also discovered a great film festival in town last night and went to see one of the movies they were playing.
With sore legs and tired feet, Rachel and I decided to keep today pretty low key, especially since we get to finally start work at the Mission tomorrow. We're all very excited to get started and see what is actually in store for us. Tomorrow will be quite the big day for us, especially since it is Inauguration day! I'm sure my entries will get much more exciting after tomorrow.
To all of my friends who are in either D.C. or somewhere else back in the U.S., I hope you have taken advantage of this Martin Luther King Jr. Day to give back to your communities as President-Elect Obama has asked on the National Day of Service. Thank you to those of you that helped to organize this day, especially those of you
View from the apartment
If you look closely enough you can see the Cinquantenaire Arch in the background working in Kansas. I very much wish I could be in the U.S. to celebrate today and tomorrow with all of you, but hope that all of you will take it all in for me. For those in D.C., I hope you are having an amazing time and not having too much trouble fighting off the crowds. You can bet I'll be watching the Inauguration speech from the Embassy tomorrow as it will be right at the end of the work day here. I just hope everyone there doesn't think I'm strange when (not if) I start to cry.
