Oh my god. The 2 girls from Taiwan are SOOOOOO annoying. They wake up butt crack ass early in the morning and ruffle through their stuff repeatedly for long periods of time. I’m not exaggerating, but today they woke up at 6:30am and opened and closed their locker about 12-15 times. I wanted to say something, but figured I’d just chill. I can understand opening and closing 4...... maybe 6 times..... we're human, we can forget stuff..... but 12-15 times? WTF!
Anyways, woke up early, grabbed some breakfast, walked around the block to explore the neighborhood. At about 10 or 11, I headed back to the hostel to join the Free Walking Tour. While waiting for the tour, I met Stewart from Australia, Tomas from Spain, and a couple other people here and there.
The tour lasted about 3 1/2 hours and covered most of the touristy stuff in Munich outside of the Hofbrauhaus. Our tour guide was a chill laid back dude that struggled a little bit with his English. Well, I shouldn’t say struggled because we could understand him, he just said “ummmm” and “yeah” a lot.
The trip concluded in the English Gardens by the
surfer’s wave (unfortunately, no one was surfing today). According to the guide, one of the largest beer gardens was located in the middle of the beer gardens by the Chinese tower. Stewart, his gf, Tomas, a couple from Canada, and I decided to head over there to finally taste those refreshing 1 Liter beers. When I got there, it was everything I expected and more. It was a sea of people just chilling out having a beer and a good time. I must say, Munich has a very laid back feeling to it. Like, it is very hustle and bustle, but there’s a duality between that and the laid back attitude in the beer gardens.
We all chatted, shared some beers, I tried the famous pretzels, etc. I then met an old dude that was rocking an Augustiner hat. For those of you that don’t know, Augustine was a monk in Munich. Apparently, back then they used to have to fast for seven weeks (yes, you read that right……SEVEN weeks). Due to this tradition, the monks started brewing beer. They say that a liter of beer has the same amount of calories as a schnitzel. Also, later on the
THe Chinese Tower Beer garden in the English Garden.
That's just hte tower. There's a grip of benches around there where people sit, drink, and are merry. pope heard that there were a bunch of monks getting all crazy and acting funny so they sent him a barrel of beer. However, since it took a while for them to traverse the Alps and get the barrel to him, the beer was undrinkable by that time. The pope immediately spit it out and said that if they wanted to drink that, it was more of a punishment to them, so he kept allowing them to do it. Oh, btw, it really is crazy how much beer has had to do with German history. Before Munich, it was pretty much a monastery and a brewery. Once Henry the Lion came and used brewery monopoly profits, he was able to destroy rival Freissing’s bridge (a source of their trade abilities) and built a bridge in Munich. From there on, Munich grew much quicker than Freissing.
Anyways, I digress. Also, while hanging out at the Gardens, I met two girls. One was a local and the other was a Venezuelan girl from Frankfurt. They were really cool and nice. It just so happens that I’m going to be in Frankfurt the last night of my trip, so the Venezuelan girl
insisted I stay at her house instead of a hostel. At about 5 or so, she had to head to the Hoptbanhof to catch a train to Frankfurt. We all walked her there, then the Munich girl went with Tomas and I to the world famous Hofbrauhaus. We chatted and I tried one of the typical dishes there. I’d tell you what it was, but I couldn’t say it, nor spell it. It kind of tasted like hotdogs though haha.
From there, we went back to the hostel to hang out, freshen up, and headed out on a pub crawl. The first stop was some subpar bar, but eh, whatever. From there we went to a better pub and then to the Hofbrauhaus. At the Hofbrauhaus, we all pretty much got liters of amazing German beer. Also, I made friends with some Bavarian old guy. It was so funny because i didn't speak ANY Bavarian and he didnt' speak a lick of English. Somehow we understood each other perfectly. Anyways, a while later after hearing German people sing their traditional songs, the old guy busts out some little portable ashtray looking thing. He then busts out some black stuff
and puts it on the back side of his hand between his thumb and index finger. WTF! What the hell is that shit?!??!?!?!
I later found it it was tobacco. However, at the time I thought it was some hard ass drug. He offered me some and I said something to the effect of "hell nah, i'm good..... thanks though". Stewart, the Australian dude, looked over and was like "what's that?". The old guy gave him some, he snorted it, and started coughing non-stop. Said it kind of tasted like mint haha. The Spanish guy did it as well and nearly choked. It was pretty damn funny actually. I got a pic (albeit though blurry) of Stewart right afterwards with a bunch of residue on his nostril haha.
After pounding those amazing beers, we went to another two pubs, then to a bar/club/karoake bar. The name escapes me, but it was pretty good times. Oh, before I forget, on the way there, there was a girl that was TOTALLY passed the hell out on the metro. We tried waking her up to help her, but it just wasn't gonna happen.
Anyways, we danced, drank, made fools out
of ourselves singing karoake (I sang Guns 'N Roses, Sublime, and Tom Jones......... strictly for comedy reasons since i'm a HORRIBLE singer haha). It was good times indeed though.
Munich has definitely surprised me. I'm enjoying it A LOT more than I ever anticipated.
