we are HUGE...
but not so much as this cacti...there are thousands of acres of these guys... we are currently sitting in a little cafe in La Paz, sipping Pacificos and listening to late funky mexican pop music. life has been particularly sunny the past few days, a beautiful drive through the desert from el rosario to guerro negro...so many cacti...just everywhere. i´ve spent time in deserts before, but never deserts with so much in them. highway 1 crosses back and forth across the baja, and our first experience with the sea of cortez was in the tiny town of mulege. a beautiful town that hasn´t become as touristy as many of the others in baja...it has an old mexico feel to it. bahia concepcion satiated lindsie´s burning need for beaches (we hadn´t stopped at any till now)...and it was immaculate. we staked out a little palapa (palm shelters that provide the perfect shade and wind protection...also some black widows) and relaxed...the canadians nearby lent us their snorkeling gear and we swam around a small island (or lindsie was towed)...not a coral reef but there was still really fantastic fish and rays.
after bahia concepcion we had our longest day yet... 260 miles through some really hot and windy desert...and some horrible drivers. i think the city drivers
desert fuel
a long stretch without gas, motorcycles are particularly susceptible to, we still only payed 3.50 a gallon for it. in la paz aren´t too bad, but on the highway everyone is crazy...truck drivers don´t have a union like the teamsters, so pay is not so good, thus providing no incentive for going slowly...and some are hauling huge loads. we had to slow for a pile of cinder blocks that fell of an overloaded truck and scattered and smashed onto a curve...no fun to hit. la paz itself is a beautiful town, we were here for cinco de mayo...not as big of a deal as i would have thought. their founders day festival was all this past weekend and i think tired everyone out...a couple of days here and then perhaps we will take a jaunt to todos santos...and then the mainland. nate
hey ya´ll. well I hope we don´t rub it in too much, but the beaches were nice to get to (finally). We continue to meet nice and welcoming people and my spanish still sucks. I was really bummed my spanish book got taken by what seemed to be a nice polica ( got to watch out for the ones that are too nice). Other than that, life is good. Driving through the deserts was amazing
San Ignacio
Mission at San Ignacio (early 1700´s) as it as my first time seeing cactus growing wild. The topography here is also more than I expected, I had no idea Baja was such a mountinous area, volcanos and everything. I guess the only really shitty thing thus far happened yesterday, just as we were pulling up to a military check point, a bee (or something) flew up my sleeve and stung me twice. It wouldn´t have been soooo bad if I didn´t have to deal with getting searched (our first time) all at the same time. But such is life I guess. We hope to find out today when we will be jumping on the ferry to Matzalan. We´re hoping it won´t be too expensive to tranport a couple of motos across the sea of cortez....but you never know around here. Nathan just found out he got his ¨rebate¨ check so that was nice to see in the accounts (thanks Bush.....for funding our trip AWAY from the states). Well I don´t want to spend too much time on the machine here, so I will just post some pictures to explain the rest. love ya all and miss you
