Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) sits on the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Finished in 1931, it has been a fixture of modern Rio and is recognizable world-wide. Brazil has more catholics than any other country in the world. The statue was erected to greet visitors from all over the world to Rio. We took a Jeep Tour to the top with travelers from Ireland, France and Sweden.
Pão de Açúcar or "Sugar Loaf" is another spot in central Rio that defines the city. A cable car takes you to a small mountain, then a second takes you to the top of the large one. The view is probably the most amazing thing I have ever seen. You can see all of Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Centro) and Notoroi. Notoroi is the city across the water from Rio; they are connected by a bridge. It reminds me of Sausalito and San Francisco.
