khao san
at night Describing Bangkok is something that most people would find very difficult, only because they would find themselves rambling on for hours trying to involve every last little detail, and, in the end, getting lost somewhere along the way. It is easy to see why Thailand is quickly becoming one of the worlds most popular tourist destinations, and why Bangkok is such a common starting point. Stepping out of our taxi onto Khao San Road late on the night of the 30th, we soon found ourselves making many friends. Thousands of people roaming this street that runs no longer than 1km, and hundreds of little shops and street venders trying to squeeze every last Baht out of you. And, of course, we can't forget the locals and the tuk tuk drivers who follow you asking where you want to go and if you need a lift. And then occasionally they may tell you what happens to be popular and ask if you're interrested. For example; massages, temples, markets, or the "ping pong show"... trust us, you do not want to know what the ping pong show is. We were so blown away by the excitement that was happening around us on Khao

during the day San that we walked past our hotel. We finally found it after some searching and asking around, a small sign and an arrow pointing down an alley. Unfortunately, when we stepped up to reception, they told us that our booking had been cancelled. They let us stay the night and we decided to figure it out the next morning. We just wanted to get out and enjoy our first night in Bangkok. Khao San Road at night is a Thailand highlight and a "must do" when in Bangkok. You can find absolutely everything from shoes and clothing, to dvds and cd's, street food, art, and bars. We didn't do much on our first night, we were both very tired, but we had a chance to browse and figure out what is was we both really wanted.
The next morning, we found out that the reason our booking was cancelled was because they never recieved payment for the rooms... someone owes us money. So, feeling a little down and annoyed, we checked out and headed out looking for a place to stay for a few nights. It didn't take long before we found a small guesthouse hidden away in an alley

i dont want the frog and stick, thank you two blocks from Khao San that would only charge 200 baths for a double room with fan. 100 bahts each, a night... around $3.30 canadian. Things were looking up again, so Evan decided to get something he'd been waiting patiently for, for a long long time. Dread locks! It took them about three hours to do all his hair, but in the end, it was worth it. They were off the hook! We then took a tuktuk tour around Bangkok, and saw many of the temples and Bhuddas. We also stopped at the train station T.A.T to book the rest of our trip in Thailand. Mr. O figured it all out for us, what a guy. After a long day of touring Bangkok we finally headed back to our area for dinner and to relax, after all, relaxing is what its all about in Thailand. When we got back to our guesthouse, we met a girl from Mexico named Maria. We ended up chilling with her for the night, buying buckets of Sang Som Set (whisky, coke, and redbull) and having a good time. We slept soundly that night, in our dingy room with a fan.
The next morning we
had slept in a good amount, but when we were finally up we headed to Khao San for food. We enjoyed more of the wonderful street food, bought souvenirs, and tried to sell some things that were taking up room in our packs. You will find many little stands that buy anything really, from books to bags, but its a tough time trying to get them to give you a good price for whatever youre selling. Nearing dinner time, Evan started to feel sick, we didnt think it was anything till he started throwing up in the garbage can. Most likely food poisoning from lunch. He took some pills, but it was no use, he just kept throwing them back up. It was a rough night, but food poisoning usually only lasts one or two nights. While Evan was trying to get to sleep and feel better (and filling our little garbage bin with puke), I found a guitar at one of those "we buy anything" stands and bought it for 1,000 bahts. The next day, Evan was up and feeling slightly better, no throwing up at least, which was good news because today we leave for Chiang Mai on
masks
scary a 12 hour bus ride. Here we come.
Until next time,
Chris and Evan
