Australia Day this year fell on a Saturday, So being the greedy Australians we are, we still get to have the "holiday" on a weekday (so we can have a day off work). This turned this years Australia day into a 3 day long weekend. With school starting up on Tuesday, monday was the end of holidays. We had a beach day planned with my husbands wonderful young adult group.

It has rained nearly all summer holiday - amazing for a place in a drought, so it was fitting that the last days of holidays were hot and sunny.

Once they were in the water, it was impossible to get them out! Miss 4 is a total water baby and was almost body surfing. The water was very choppy and there was a definate rip pulling you 100 metres further down the beach than where you hopped in. It was a workout to go swimming. The tide was also heading out, so after you got dumped by a wave you were pulled back out again. I had 3 kids at the beach, the older ones floating down with the rip, so I was chasing them yelling for them to come back (which they were ignoring and kept on swimming) while I was turned a wave knocked over the baby and she was screaming and frightened (we were on the beach, but that didnt stop her from being pushed over by the tide) Needless to say when I finally got them all out of the ocean I marched them back to Daddy (who was looking after the BBQ, tent, and everyones bags) and we left baby there and older two girls and I hit the beach again.

They had so much fun collecting shells and just swimming and more swimming. Miss 6 kept saying "Isnt this the most fun you have ever had in your life!!" Ummmmm... possibly not, but she kept saying, Yes you are, cause I was squealing and giggling at all the pushing around that was happening because of the weather. The other sad thing was that in the bad storms we had over New Year most of the beautiful beach had been sucked away. Mini cliffs of sand were all that were left, as the lower beach was all gone. Due to being sunburnt very easily I finally got them out and back up to the party.

We had a group of around 80 or so that had gathered to celebrate. (See Last years Australia day blog - we have done this 3 years running now) We had the obligatory BBQ sausages for lunch. We were even so Aussie, or call us unorganised that someone forgot cooking utensils that we used a stick to turn the sausages and cook them! A few water pistols, soccer balls, snacks and it was a relaxing day at the beach.

We were in the middle of our beach day when people started to say that President Hinckley had passed away. It put a more sombre mood on the day, but was intresting to know that we all found out after only half an hour of his passing in the United States. Good to know that with technology you can be anywhere and still be reached. Between us all there were lots of texts and phone messages.

We had a fun time and despite putting suncream on 4 times, I got a little burnt on the back of my legs, must have missed there. One daughter has one round red eye (like a black eye but red) I also must have missed that. Oh well, atleast no sore back or shoulders (we all have to wear shirts - we are so white!!) as the next day is first day back to school. I was worried they might get burnt and not be able to enjoy the first day of school.

So that was the last harrah for the summer holidays. Thanks to all the lovely young adults who helped look after all my children. As mentioned by my daugther we possibly had the "best day of our lives" 😊

Contrast to Canada
Today we have -28 C with wind chill to -40 C Your beach party is a great contrast to our temporary arctic intrusion. Temporary because in March sprinf may come. And reall it doesn't usuall stay this cold too long. Enjoyed your text and pictures.
