We arrived in the Loire, on the day of the France v England semifinal game. I didn't give England much of a chance, I am afraid. The French seemed confident, and with man machine Sebastian Cheval glowering menacingly from every issue of Paris Match, who could blame them. Over the last few days you could not move without seeing French kids playing en masse with newly-acquired rugby balls, or checkout assistants in discount supermarkets sporting tricoleur face paint.

Well, instead it was good new for my English chums. The text messages flew in - riotous scenes prevailed in the Dome, and in Chiswick. The result a severe test of national character, my mother predicted by text. She meant the French, but the same could be true of the English. Such a dilemma - who should I support for the final? I think it will have to be England.
