Maya Beach Hey all!
We've finally left Koh Toa and really missing the place now! We got the overnight boat to Krabi, which lukcily wasn't as bad as the last overnight boat we did! This one was bit bigger with a fair few people on it! Felt bit like a big sleepover all lying in the beds...strange but funny! Set off at 9pm...vallium, whiskey, few mental dreams...next thing ya know it's 10am and just arrived in Krabi!
We were planning on staying in Krabi for a night or so to see what it was like, but as soon as got there we weren't feeling it! It was hot, smelly and as it was mainland there was no sea breeze! It was Bangkok all over again...which was bad when your used to the island life! ANd was so excited to see Koh Phi Phi (which was our next stop) that decided to go straight there!
So another boat, and we were finally hey! I have dreamed of coming to this island for sooo long...well, just like everyone else it started when I first saw the Beach I guess! This is the island it was filmed on! But must say, I've
so far been a little disapointed with it!
We got here at 1pm, and it was soooo hot! Defo the hottest day we've had so far! Sorry if this annoys ya as I know ya probably sick to death of the rain over there, therefore don';t need me moaning about the sun, but this was not what we needed when we were tired, hungry and carrying far too much stuff in a backpack (yes, I know ya warned me Dad, but ya know what I'm like!)...and this wouldn't have been so bad if it was any other island we'd been to, but on this island accommodation was near IMPOSSIBLE to find! Unless ya like sleeping in flea infested beds, peeing in poo-stained toilets, and don't mind the stench of stale sweat and sewage! We must have been to at least 20 different places, and all of them where rank and seriously over priced! We were so hot and bothered that we ended up settling for this shoe box of a room where we had to share a double bed for all 3 of us! Not nice!
But luckily Sar got some advice from a guy she met in
KohPhangan (Mike P Smith...yes, the P does matter) who was staying at a place called Phi Phi Lodge! It's still not the nicest - very basic, bit smelly, no hot water and the toilet randomly bubbles up- but much better than the last place! So happy now!
And Phi Phi not what we expected! The scenery is absolutely amazing...it really is beautiful around here! But everything is really over priced here! The food and drink is sooo much more expensive than the other side of Thailand, and feel bit cheated that we're having to pay 1,200 bahts a night (which is over our budget) for a room that is not the best! We could get it for bout 800 bahts at other side! But then can't really grumble bout it as I think it's all coz of the Tsunami!
There is evidence of the devastation all over, even 3 years on! There is rubble everywhere, people still building, and there is a constant smell of sewage as apparantly they have not had the chance to sort the sewage site out properly yet! There are signs all over which indicate which way to go if it happens again! And
we were speaking to a Thai girl ina resturant last night, and she was telling us her experience of it! And how she had lost over half of her friends...we were all in tears! To think of any one of you lot not being in my life anymore, let alone half of you, just not worth thinking of! Makes ya feel very lucky! So guess don't mind paying bit more to help them get on their feet!
But also seems to be lot of youngsters round here..bit like KoPhangan! Am I really getting old? A lot of Irish again too, who all seem to be here for one reason...go out, get hammered and act like pricks (sorry any Irish but just my experience of them over here!)...think there are more of them in Thailand then Ireland itself! Whats the crack- you all getting chep flights or something!
So not been out drinking that much hey, which is kinda nice as chance to recharge and save the pennies...we've come attached to Carlito's bar which is on the beach...just sit, chill and watch the waves whilst drinking our Shinga beer! Mmmmm! Then been fresh to get out and see the
place during the day!
Did a longboat trip on the 2nd day here...only us 3 on it, and took us all around the islands in the area (there are over 80 islands and only bout 6 of them are lived on!). Started on Monkey Bay which was a tiny beach with loadsa monkeys! They were so cute...and I say were cute coz I got attacked by them! Not sure what I did wrong, but one turned on me and next thing they were all chasing me into the sea! So I did my scream, run on the spot whilst flapping my arms like a nutcase thing...and everyone laughed at me!
Then we moved onto Viking Cave where actually Vikings lived in a cave! Very biazare! And then the bit that I had been waiting for for years....Maya Beach! This is the beach that The Beach was actually filmed on! And what a surreal experience! The tide was out, therefore we were told we had to get off the boat and swim through a cave to get to it! So we filled a water proof bag with our stuff and off we swam! It was just like the film...the
3 of us swiming to the beach with a bag on our shoulder (only a don't think any of them had a life jacket to use as a floater like I did! I got freaked out by some fish whilst swimming, and Nik had to come rescue me as I panicked...well, bless her she tried, but actually nearly drowned me! So life jacket was thrown my way! How embarrassing...although I had to use less energy then everyone else, so who was laughiny by the end hey!).
We had to walk through the jungle bit to get to the beach and was so excited (got big cheesy smile on me face as I'm writing this now!)...then we were there! And it was just like the film but even more beautiful! Had pure goosebumps!!! Unfortunetly we couldn't stay too long as the time was getting on, so planning to go back on Nik's bday and spend the day there!
And did another longtail boat tour today! This time we went to Rantee Beach was gorgeous! There was no one at all around, and the sea was crystal clear! Then went to Loh Ba Koa Bay which was just as nice!
Considering we were all hungover to hell, it was the best hangover cure! Beats the English way of sitting in, watching TV, eating and moaning how tired we are!
Oh, and had my usual bad luck in Thailand! Message from my dad the other day...turns out I have had 3 cash cards and my ipod stolen! Happened in KoPanghan just before the Full Moon Party and never even realised! So some lucky Thai has had 2 weeks worth of shopping sprees on me! Good job Dad checks my statements and flagged the big spends (cheers again Dad!)...but most annoying thing is have to go back to KoPhangan to be able to report it...and just got to the other side of Thailand! So gotta wait for Dawn to get here week today, then go back to the other side! Feel bad on Nik and Sar as cutting the time short at this side of Thailand (plan was a month on each side!), but they've been ace about it! They are good ones! And luckily we have all fallen in love with Samui and Koh Toa so much that I'm actually looking forward to going back! Too expensive and too commercial
where we are! Oh, and also means we get to go to another Full Moon! Woohoo!!
Anyway, probably bored ya stupid as have babbled loads on this one!
Hope ya all well!
Missing ya all!
(Feel free to leave mesasages on my blog...in other words, you best all start leaving them coz some of ya have been bit slack! Hehe!)
Love ya
