Our Dive Boat!
Our dive boat in the distance, we sunbathe on the front while it takes us out to dive sites. This is across the dirt road from our shop (you can see the logo on the building on the left). J&H: We decided that something about the unified voice is a little creepy...so here’s an update from J and H…
J: I DJed at my first real event last night! The party was essentially a rave, so considering my DJing style, I was chosen to start the party off. All the DJ’s after me spun electronic music. There were five DJs including me (I still can’t get over how much I love the sound of that!). Two of the guys came from the mainland just for the party and brought a serious arsenal of equipment, including two Technics turntables (which were the only turntables on the island), two CDJ’s and a serious club mixer. Another guy lent his speakers (we could still hear the music after a half hour gruelling hike away from the party that morning) and there were also various strobe lights and a projector screen suspended over the beach (which I helped rig up). I helped set up the site and we were working on it for nearly four hours before the first shuttle bus arrived with partygoers. We had a well stocked bar and a covered DJ area (thankfully, because it rained a few times in
How we get to our dive boat
and this is the pier by which we access said dive boat the course of the night), all on a random little private beach a good drive outside of town. I really can’t do how good it looked justice, but suffice it to say that my expectations were far far surpassed.
J: Anyways, I think Hannah put it best when she split the night into thirds: the first was so much fun (the first being from when the party started - 10:30-1:00), the second, 1:00-3:30 was manageable but we were getting tired and ready to go home (only I really wanted to stay and help clean up, so we planned to tough it out), the last third, was terrible. We ended the party bug bitten and tired (despite trying to sleep for a couple of hours on these crappy lawn chairs) and having to hike out of the place at 5 in the morning straight up hill. Thankfully, once we hiked out a friend drove by and got us the rest of the way into town for a bit before 6:00.
J: I had a great time DJing, but maybe even more significantly, I DJed what I wanted to DJ, even though the organizers were looking for more electronic music, and the
crowd that was there at the time dug it. (The organizers didn’t really mind, its was more a matter of expectations on their end. Although, I’m not sure how they misunderstood “I DJ everything besides electronic music”.) The point is, DJing can be a pressure-full situation and I really feel that I stood up to it this time and excelled, which for me has been the hardest part so far!
H: I’m itchy everywhere. Hahaha. I just said that out loud and Jon wrote it down, but it is so true. The (aforementioned) party, was a good time, I got to see a lot of people (dare I say friends) up until the bugs started feasting on me, and I became tired and cranky (I’m sure you are all shocked)….but all in all a cool experience. And after the hike, the ride in to town and passing out in bed for a few hours we got to get up and start the...afternoon, with a friendly visit to the local doctor’s office. As it turns out, I have a fairly serious middle ear infection, which is currently being treated so there is no reason to panic. I’m taking antibiotics, some time
Our classroom
no...seriously off diving, and I have to go back for 3 different injections (and let me just say they don’t inject you in your arm-when the doctor told me to turn over I actually said “you have to be kidding”).
H: And so in the haze of partying and blinding pain (or at least pain that somewhat impairs normal vision), you might be surprised to discover that we have actually been incredibly productive. We are taking our Rescue Diver exam this afternoon, and over the past week we became fully certified Reef Check Checkers and Teachers. The Reef Check Course, including two dives, two exams and a hefty load of classroom time was surprisingly interesting, relevant and exciting. And now we are certified to conduct reef monitoring and train future volunteers (we even get ID cards with our photos on them).
H&J: What’s left to say? This is Hannah and Jon, signing off from the Hidden Garden Cabins. Until next time faithful readers...
