Iwo Jima Flag Raising
This is the statue (at Arlington Cemetary) based on the most reprodcued photo in history. Day 12 – Friday – Washington DC It's late and im tired and we have an early start, so im stealing some (ok a whole heap) of John & Jen's travel blog to put in here!!!!!
We're hitting the warmer weather and had a beautiful day today to tour DC. For the first time in our US part of the trip, we were hot. The temperature has reached a sweaty 27 degrees and we are wondering what Orlando will have in store for us.
Today we headed in via the Metro system and took a hop on hop off tour of the city. We were driven by the majestic buildings such as the Capitol Building, The Smithsonian, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetary and, of course, the White House.
We were impressed by the Washington Memorial that is held up by gravity alone (no mortar at all) and the Iwo Jima Memorial at Arlington Cemetery. That was a lot bigger than we expected.
We also had chance to pop into the Natural History Museum, which is part of the Smithsonian, to see the Hope Diamond and lots of other very large sparkly stones.
Capitol Building
A bit closer than the day before! John was worried as Jen took photos of them all in case she was constructing her Christmas wish list!
All in all we liked the buildings and look of Washington DC, but the local population made it a little trying - as examples, we almost got strip searched before we could get into a place for lunch and everyone kept telling us when to cross the road whether we wanted to or not in a way that suggested that if we didnt comply immediately they would cuff us up against the bonnet of the nearest car!
After the helpfulness of the Boston and Niagara population, we felt the DCers could do with a course in public relations. Roll on Orlando!
Oh well!! We did though have a YUMMMY dinner (Red Lobster, ANOTHER American chain hahaha). Tomorrow we head towards Orlando, with a stop over in Columbia.
Oh - and we DID manage to hit THREE yes THREE states today. Well ok ok, TWO states (Virginia & Maryland) and one district (DC) lol!
"Dean's Details" –
Other than the big buildings and museums, (and cops on Segways) Washington DC doesn't have a whole lot going for it.
