Perth
Taken from Kings Park Well I am down to my last few hours in Australia! I can’t believe it has been six months already. Crazy! I planned on staying in Australia for a year but I decided not to work while I was here so my Australian money has run out. Guess that means time to move on to my next big adventure.
I have spent the last two weeks here in Perth. It has been very relaxing. Perth is pretty chilled out. There is not much to do in the City itself but if you have some wheels there are heaps of things to do around. Basically, I have been chilling out, hanging with Maike, Aimee (who I was staying with), her boyfriend Craig, and Bee. I had met Aimee and Bee in Canada and they had stayed with me for a short while. Maike left to go up north on Saturday, I will miss her dearly.
The weather hasn’t been that great here (well it is now that I am leaving, doh!). I did manage to get a few beach days in before the rain started. The waves here are wicked!! I went back about 19 years when I hit
the water, splashing around in the waves, acting like a little kid. Some of the waves were so crazy it would come crashing down drag you up onto the beach, thus filling your bottoms with sand and then dragging you back across the ocean floor, so you got the double fill. Sometimes if it caught you just right, it would send you rolling underneath the water, not to worry you always came up after the wave went over you. Sometimes the wave, even if it wasn’t high would just kick my legs out from underneath me and send me flying. You always made sure to check your bathers were still on when you came back up. The beach is nice here, we always went to Trigg Beach which is by an area of Perth called Scarborough, a popular surfing area. I definitely think the west coast is more “surfer” territory.
It did manage to clear enough one afternoon that Maike and I walked around Kings Park. It is a huge park that over looks the City and the Swan River.
Maike and I went to Fremantle (Freo as called by the locals) last Wednesday. We spent the afternoon
wandering around the area (south of Perth) and shopping. That night we did a torch lit tour of the Fremantle Prison (Max. security). That was super cool. The prison was in operation up to 1991, when the Government shut it down, I think it was due to a riot. We wondered around in the dark as we learned about the prison and got spooked by actors that would pretend to be prisoners and tell us their stories of prison life. We were able to check out some of the cells, no toilets, just a bucket, and only big enough for a single bed and that was it. It would have been hard times. It was really interesting.
Last night Bee took me up to the Hills. We hiked up to the top of a ridge to watch a sunset and look at the city lights. Unfortunately we had too much cloud come in so we didn’t get a beautiful sunset but the lights were brilliant. We drank a bottle of champagne and had a good chat. On the way back to the car I lost my footing and stumbled in the creek. At least it was good for a
No Standing
Good thing I am standing on the opposite side. I wonder what the fine would be? laugh! With my soaking wet feet we went to a local pub and indulged. My last “top notch” meal in Australia, we ordered an expensive bottle of wine, I had kangaroo and finished off with an apple and rhubarb crumble.
Australia has been great, the memories and friends I have made will be with me forever. I have really enjoyed my time here and so glad I did it, took the plunge!
I will miss: Tim Tams, dairy products, Midori (maybe I can get this at home?), Koalas, Kangaroos, the friends I made, the beach, warm weather, local hospitality, surf shops, the dance clubs, sweet chilli sauce on everything, meat pies, the Outback, the rainforest, I could go on and on!
I won’t miss: The beef, lack of public toilets, their restaurant system, mobile network, lack of street signage, price of alcohol, make that the price of anything, their fashion sense, Virgin Blue Airlines.
Today I did some last minute things, closed out my bank account, sent some stuff home. I am trying to think if there is anything else I need to do? I guess not, maybe get one last meat pie, yum. I had
Prison Cell
Freo Prison to repack my backpack and weigh it. I am only allowed 15 kilos on the flight! That is hardly anything so I had to pick and choose what I really wanted to take with me, it feels like I am leaving home again.
I am off to Singapore for a few days and then to Thailand. I am so excited and slightly nervous. Bring on the next Big Adventure!
