After an early morning flight from Bangkok to Krabi then a two hour minibus ride we arrived on the gorgeous island of Ko Lanta.
It's the third time we've been here. So why do we keep coming back? You may well ask.
The world is a big place and we intend to go and explore more of it very soon but for now its great to take some time out in a place we know so well and love.
We rolled up to the reception of Best House and the owner came out. She instantly recognised us from three years ago and greeted us warmly. She knew about the booking but hadn't put a name to the face.
We dropped our gear in the room and went to the mini mart to buy cold water. The owner there also Instantly recognised us and asked if the family were coming too and wanted to know all about our lives for the past 18 months since we were last here.
This carried on and on everywhere we went, we were recognised by waiters/ waitresses and bungalow owners. ( we have stayed in a few places here)
We also came
across travellers we'd met on previous occasions. It really did begin to feel like we had come home.
The next morning as we walked towards Funky Fish restaurant for breakfast on the beach, one of the waitresses spotted us and came running out to greet us with arms stretched out for a hug.
In no time all the staff were round us catching up and the first question was always " How long you stay?" And then "Where are the children?" Meaning Jake and Kyla of course.
I guess we all made a big impression on everyone last time we were here.
We have soon settled into the old routine. Breakfast in a beach bar watching the world slowly coming to life. Thats possibly my favourite time of day as the temperature is pleasant, the sea is calmly lapping the white sand and hardly a soul in sight. The only sounds are tbe birds singing and the gentle humming of a distant boat far out to sea. Very serene!
From there we drag ourselves away to walk to the far end of the beach where there are tall trees to provide lots of shade and there's a
rocky headland so it's the best place to snorkel. Theres not a great deal of coral, just a few clumps and an odd fish or two but I did see a Moray eel swim from rock crevice to another quite close to the shore.
As the sun creeps higher in the sky, meaning the shade dissapears, we go for a long lunch in the cool shade of a beach bar only to appear back on the beach for a last swim before watching the sun go down.
As the sun dips below the horizon and sinks into the sea the bars and restaurants along the beach come alive with an array of twinkling coloured lights. We often spend our evenings in one of these bars that serve delicious Thai food. Some entertaining us with fire shows.
One of our favourite places to eat, though is outside the mini mart. Several food stalls have set up and there are six long tables where people congregate to eat. Of course the mini mart is a good place to buy cold drinks to accompany your meal. There's always a good vibe of travellers, young and old, with countless stories to tell.
Best House
Set in a tropical garden and up on stilts to create an airy cool feeling in the heat of the day We've already made new friends. First night a couple from Sweden, who have been coming to these parts since the 1980s and the night after, a couple from Germany. Both couples, like us, return frequently. I'm sure our paths will cross again quite soon. It's one of those places that gets under your skin and you just have to return.
