Places to go and things to do in Vietnam and Cambodia
16 years ago, April 22nd 2008 No: 1 Msg: #33247
Hi
Late July and early Aug we will be travelling through Vietnam and Cambodia. We will be starting at hanoi and working our way down the coast, hoping to use the train service that connects with saigon. Can you buy an open ticket for the train or do you have to but a ticket for each leg of the journey? Anyone travelled the same route by bus? Is it as bad as i have read from other travel bloggers?!! Where are the best places to stop overnight and explore? Are there any must sees?!
Also doing the same in Cambodia, has anyone travelling to Bangkok via train or bus? What\'s it like, would you recommend? What are the must sees in Cambodia?
Thanks for your help!

In vietnam the train service is very good, but i think you have to buy a ticket for each leg of the trip, what i reccomend doing is to take a train from hanoi to nha trang, stopping along the way wherever you please, and from nha trang, take a motorcycle tour from nha trang through the central highlands to dalat. I took a 3 day tour through the central highlands and it was the best thing I did in vietnam, it cost me 50$ a day, including a driver, food and accomadation. if you want i can recommend a really good driver for you. as for busses in vietnam, I found that they were great, they have really comfortabel sleeper busses that do routes between all major cities, so whoever told you that they were bad must be a real softy....cambodia on the other hand is a different story.
the busses are much slowe and more uncomfortable, the roads are in pretty bad shape, but it is still bearable, maybe bring some earpluds as the drivers pretty much lean on the horn for the entire trip. the road from seim reap(angkor wat) to the thai border is definetly one of the worst roads in south east asia. it is unpaved and full of huge potholes and dips. I took a bus from bangkok to the cambodia border, then jumped in the back of a pickup truck from the border to seim reap, i dont know if this is possible going the other way.... i believe that july/august is the raining season in cambodia, so the road between seim reap and the thai border may be virtually impassible, in that case you whould have to fly😞, anyway if you have anymore questions feel free to ask!

Hi John
Thanks for the heads up on rainy season!! unfortunately we can only visit during this time as we have to be in Australia for the 08th Sept to activate our working visas so rainy season here we come! We'll deffo do something like you mentioned, just wasn't sure how many stops to make down the coast, one or 2 sounds good though. I'll look at flights for the cambodia to bangkok leg, can these easily be booked when you get there or do you have to book them in advance, if it's the rainy season it shouldn't be so busy should it?!!
cheers for your help

Hi.

I went from Siem Reap to Cambodia in Dec'06. It costs me about US$10 to get a bus ticket but like what John said earlier, the journey was the most uncomfortable journey I have been on. I took a bus from about 7am in the morning and reached Bangkok at around 10pm with a couple of stops in between. It is actually quite difficult to see the road while you are on the bus because it is really too dusty.

booking air tickets anywhere in asia is very easy, any travel agency can arrange them for you, or you can go directly to the airline office and book through them. as for the coast in vietnam, hoi an and nhatrang seem to be the hotspots, both were great, hoi an is kinda an old colonial like town, while nha trang is a newer party spot. one big let down about angkor wat was the amount of tourist, not the backpacker types, but hoards of korean package tourists. when i was there there must have been at least 150 tour busses packed full of people. so in the raining season im sure it will be much better! hi,
You can take a open bus ticket in Vietnam from hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city. About train ticket you'd buy each leg such as Hanoi to Hue(some day visit Hue-old capital) then take a trai, bus to Da nang(some beautiful beaches) - Hoi An-ancient town then take a train, bus, flight to Nha Trang or direct to Sai Gon... hope that you'll have a good time in Vietnam
