We are looking at backpacking for one month across these countries. Is flying the best mode of transport between these countries? Is there any neighbouring countries I should add to the Itenary? Would love some info from anyone who has done a trek similar to this. Thanks! Reply to this

I think your trip is very ambitious! You can spend 30 days alone just in Thailand!

How about leaving Indonesia for another time and do Malaysia and Thailand on this trip. You could do a few days in Singapore if you want.

Transportation is pretty good in Thailand... There is even train service from Malaysia to Thailand.

Where to start? You could fly to Singapore, spend a few days there (Singapore will be the most expensive place to visit.) From Singapore you could go to Malaysia and work your way up to Thailand. When you run out of time and money fly back to Singapore for a final night before you go home.

Or, you could start in Bangkok, see Thailand and from there work your way down to Hat Yai and Phuket then over to Malaysia and from there to Singapore and fly from there back to Bangkok for your ride home.

Some other sources of travel advice you might want to consult!

Hi Sir Halberd!
Thanks for your helpful advice. I have actually been to Thailand before, I went to Bangkok and Phuket and did most of the usual Touristy kind of stuff like Tiger Temple, elephant riding, saw alot of Phuket and thought Bangkok was a waste of time. We were planning to go to Koh Samui and possibly Phuket again just for about 10 days all up. So I was wanting to experience more of the other surrounding countries, possbly further north like Vietnam etc. I will be with my partner and we are planning the Asian tour as a Sunny break before we head to UK where I will doing student exchange for 6 months (I am from Australia). I have heard this about Singapore that there's not alot there and can be expensive. I am not planning on huge shopping adventures as we are living out of backpacks so I am just after some great sight seeing and beautiful beaches where we can also get a real taste of the different cultures. If you have further advise I would be so appreciative. Thanks : ) Reply to this

Samij,
You will need at least 60 days to explore some of Indonesia, so trying to see about 5 Asian countries in 30 days is not possible.
If you are after a cheap holiday with unique experiences then Indonesia is the place for you. Is it possible for you to at least extend your time to 6 weeks and just do Indonesia.
Have a look at my photos from my 5.5 month trip through Indonesia by myself ( lone female with no language skills) in 2006.

I love Indonesia and am heading back there on April 10th for 27 days of fun, laughter and madness as I will be on a whirlwind trip this time with West Java, Bali, North Sumatra, Ketambe Aceh and West Sumatra. Basically a week in each area except Bali which will be 2 days to catch up with friends.
Willing to answer any questions until Wednesday night.
