establishing a travel Itinerary through Southeast Asia

Hi there

To all those who can help me, I am intending on setting out from New Zealand in approximately September 2008 and am wanting to spend about 3 – 4 months in Southeast Asia before heading up to the UK. Currently I have only done some minor research into the country’s I am keen to head to. So far I am thinking Thailand, Singapore, Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia and the Philippines. I am interested in all types of backpacking so I would love any feedback you could provide. If I could make a wish list of some of the things I would like to do it would include:
• Relaxing on some beautiful beaches
• Diving and Snorkeling with amazing fish life
• Seeing some historical sites
• Visiting some amazing architecture and cities (I am a town planner so very interested in this one)
• Meeting some crazy people
• Taking in some massive festivals and parties (I really enjoy dance music, particularly D&B and electro and breaks)

Any help you could provide me with my wish list would be most appreciated. Also in what order and time of the year to visit these places would also be of great help.

Thanks very much and hope to see you there!!

hey simon

there seems to be quite a few people with similar interests as you on this forum. have a go at reading through the replies they get for varied opinions.

here are my $0.02

Beautiful beaches: Perhentian Island, Terengganu, Malaysia. Fabulous white sand beaches, snorkeling, diving, awesome island people, not very touristy. Make sure you avoid the monsoon season, though. weather & sea is absolute crap at the end of the year.

Architecture: I'm an architecture student, and some of my favourite buildings are located in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The convention centre, putra mosque, boat club and ministry of finance are some notable buildings. The new federal territory was planned based on some garden city ideals, and its a great experience to walk along the Putrajaya boulevard.

Historical sites: Melaka, Malaysia (relics of the old british colonisation of malaya). bandung, indonesia (from the days of dutch occupation)

crazy people & parties: koh phangan's full moon beach party. never been to one myself, but will definitely try one day. For something more cultural, the Malaysian Independence Day celebration in KL or putrajaya is pretty good too. That'll be on the 31st August every year. Reply to this

Hi.

Actually I think it will be difficult for you to dive in Malaysia during the period because the monsoon season is usually from Oct-Feb. However, I will suggest going Phuket to dive. Have not dived there personally, but from the pictures I've seen and the feedback is that the dive sites near Phuket is actually quite good. Similar to ritchie, I also heard that the divesites in Philippines are fantastic as well.

• Relaxing on some beautiful beaches

Head to Railay beach in southern Thailand, on the Andaman coast. Its a penninsula cut off from the mainland, almost like an island. Absolutely stunning, three beaches Tonsai beach is the cheap one, but by no means ugly, really amazing place, with a secret hidden lagoon in a hollow limestone karst 300 feet high. Loads of monkeys there too.

• Diving and Snorkeling with amazing fish life

Head to Ko Tao in the Gulf of Thailand, apparently the cheapest place in the world to do a PADI diving course, home to whale sharks and trigger fish. Even if your just snorkelling there is a ship wreck about 200m out to sea in the main bay by the port of an old fishing boat with some stunning coral, easily accessible and you can see the mast sticking out at low tide!

• Seeing some historical sites

Got to head to Cambodia, see the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh or Angkor Wat, the old historical temple in Siem Reap, absolutely stunning place. Other than that you could try the Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand. Or visit the Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi, Northern Thailand where you can ride the Death Railway which the POWs rode, very moving and intertesting.

• Visiting some amazing architecture and cities (I am a town planner so very interested in this one)

Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia has some amazing skyscrapers and buildings. Most notably, the Petronas Twin Towers and Menara KL which has the best views of all of KL. Singapore has some tall skyscrapers but they are pretty dull to be honest, just like big straight towers not really that interesting. Although the Opera house is quite interesting, looks slightly like a pineapple! There is also the unofficial symbol of the city, the Merlion, a big Lion/Fish fountain, its ok, bit strange really. Personally I would'nt recommend Singapore, its very overpriced, no "natural" beauty to see, and is pretty dull.

• Meeting some crazy people

Head to Koh San Road in Bangkok, there are plenty of bouncing bars there, most notably the Roof Bar. Where you can get a few Chang beers pretty cheap. Also Ko Pha Ngan is awesome, for some reason it has a slightly undeserved bad reputation. Personally I found it beautiful, the beach is not destroyed and the morning after the night before you wouldnt even know there had been thousands of people on the beach the night before, someone must clean up during the night. The area is bouncing 3 weeks of the month and the nights running up to Full Moon Partys are just as much fun.

• Taking in some massive festivals and parties (I really enjoy dance music, particularly D&B and electro and breaks)

Got to be Full Moon or half Moon parties on Ko Pha Ngan, the Half Moon party is getting more popular, it takes place in the forest! Just stay away from the drugs, you can end up paying the ultimate death penalty price!!

Good luck and enjoy!!!!!!!! Reply to this
