I will be staying this summer with a friend who lives in Shenzhen for about 10 days. During this time I was planning on visiting Hong Kong, Macau and Guanzhou. But after reading a bit I was think of dropping Guanzhou and perhaps go visit Guilin? The Karst scenary seems incredible. I was wondering if this is a do-able side trip from Shenzhen, perhaps with spending a night in Guilin? Could anyone help? Any other great destinations in the south of China would be greatly appreciated. Reply to this

You would probably want to spend at least a few nights in Guilin and Yangshuo, especially since Shenzhen in itself has little to offer in the form of sightseeing. Check wikitravel for some ideas of how to get there. Just remember that you need a proper tourist visa to leave the Shenzhen special economic zone, whether you are heading for Guangzhou, Guilin or other. Reply to this

Actually, if you dont have too much time, you might want to go to Yangshuo instead of Guilin, less tourists and as stunning as Guilin. You will need to spend a night there, but it worth it ! waking up in those mountains is a truly amazing experience! Reply to this

Hi, thanks for the replies. Is Yanshuo closer to Shenzhen? I'm having difficulty finding information about travel times and how these places can be reached in China. Reply to this

Yes it is, at least if you take the bus....
You can visit http://www.yangers.com/ where you will find all the info you need including how to get there from Shenzhen. The train is an interesting experience and much cheaper than flying; overnight bus is an option too but then you better like all chinese kung fu style movies and karaoke and most importantly not be too tall....
Have fun! Reply to this
