I\'m currently saving for a trip, it\'s a very slow progress!

I\'d like to visit canada, south america, haiti, india and papua new guinea and i\'m from scotland.

Any ideas/tips on how i should go about this in the cheapest way. Maybe split it into two trips? Getting around? accomodation types? essentials?

Thanks for any advice. Reply to this

Hi Laclous, depends on how much you can save and when you want to go?, also how much time you will have to travel, Canada is a big country and the are a few airlines now that travel to Canada and are quite reasonably priced such as zoom and i think zoom fly from Glasgow but that is all down to where you are in Scotland aswell. as the UK is a hub for international flights out of Europe it does mean that it is cheaper in the UK for flights than the US or other parts of the world so thats a bonus already. Hati and Papua Guinea are not so easy as if you where to get a round the world ticket then most alliances do not cover these country's and if you get single tickets its not cheap to get from Oz or NZ to Hati or Papua New Guinea.

Also flying from South America is normally done out of Santiago in Chile and the are only a couple of airlines that fly from santiago over the pacific and the airline i will be using Lan Chile only fly to either Oz or Nz and i do not thing they do stop overs at Hati or Papua New Guinea, so really you would have to go to Oz or Nz. Someone on here may correct me cause im no expert im just using my own knowledge.

South America is not all that cheap to get to and internal flights are not either so certainly a round the world ticket would get you there and get you internal flights cheaper than i have seen on an individual basis. Certainly all these places are do able on single tickets but its down to cash really and how much you have or can save.

Getting around in Canada the best bet would be to buy a discovery pass and use the Canadian Greyhound, South America its down to time and where you are going, but most country's have fairly cheap bus systems and i here that in Argentinian the buses are luxurious.

Accommodation i would suggest using Hostels great way to meet people and normally cheap as chips.Other ways are using websites such as hospitality club or couchsurfing and basically staying at a locals house or mixing the two to meet locals and backpackers. The are various hostel sites such as hotelworld and so many i think other bloggers on her could give you a list aslong as your arm. if your a student then you could get an international student card which save you money on hostels and other stuff globally and you could try going to STA to look further in the trip.

For my impending global trip i used Trailfinders who were brillant, but the are other agencys out there so shop around and do some research, from what you have said your at the early planning stage and this is great, its means lots of great ideas, daydreaming etc, making lists and its all part of the adventure😊

Essentials would be passport, a willingness to embrace new cultures and leave your comfort zone, money always helps....lol, certainly a backpack, do not take one of those wheelie suitcases unless you plan to live it up in high luxury, otherwise a good sturdy rucksack will be your friend and home on the road.

Thx Mike😊

Thanks a lot for your advice. You're right, it's all still in the very early stages. Which is fun, lots of day dreaming and reading happening just now.

I'm now thinking my trip to canada will be one trip of it's own. I go to canada most years but i've never been outside ontario, i'd like to spend a lot of time in montreal and BC. But due to the price of internal flights and travelling times on coach i think i'll just have this as one holiday. I'll check out that discovery pass you were talking about when i get home (at work just now.. working hard as you can see!). So that should be Canda sorted anyway. I've found canadian affair to be the cheapest airline for Canada so far.

I'm thinking for the rest a round the world ticket should do the trick (south america, india, maybe NZ and south africa). As for Haiti and papua new guinea, i'll have to do some more research on which airlines i can use and where's i'd need to leave from.

Don't worry i wouldn't even contemplate taking a wheelie suitcase, i'm planning on travelling as lightly as possible. One thing i'm quite concerned about as I dont have much experience travelling is safety in some countries. As i will be travelling alone and i'm a young female. Is the image people get of it being unsafe exagerated? How have you found it to be? What should i avoid/look out for?

Thanks again,

Michelle

p.s some info on budgets would be appricated too 😊 Reply to this

Hi Michelle traveling as lone female shouldn't be an issue, my girlfriend is currently traveling around SEA on her own and we meet up when we both get to Oz, budget is a hard one cause its down to how much you want to do, how much you can save and for how long you can save and whether you go bargain basement hostels or if you go to top notch hostels or hotels. I could pluck a figure out of my head for you but it may not suit your plans or your route.

If you do want me to suggest a budget, then let me know more stuff like how many others etc and i could give you a rough idea.

That's cool. I sorta figured the whole "it's dangerous travelling alone as a female" had been exagerated.

I'm pretty sure i'll be budget all the way. I spend about 2 or 3 nights a week sleeping in my van during the summer cause we always just bugger off somewhere up north for the weekend. So i'm sure i can deal with some dodgey hostels. So if i was going totally budget, travelling by coach, hostelling, camping and eating cheap.. what are you looking at for a 3 month trip? (not including flights and all that jazz)

Have you been to Inda?

Hi Michelle your getting loads of work done today......lol, im going to India on this trip, but i have heard good things about India. If you equate £500 each month to get buy on and then times thats about £15-20 a day. So £1500 Minimum but id add an extra £500 to that and take at least two grand. Of cause you would need an extra few grand on top of that for your RTW ticket and stuff to take, injections, malaria tabs etc.

So about £3,500-£4000, its just a guesstimated so your will no what is needed and not needed, certainly SEA can be done fairly cheaply, my girlfriend satyed in a hostel in Chaing Mai in northern Thailand and it cost 80thb (Thai Baht) a night which is roughly a pound a night, you can get food of street vendors for about 20-40bht, so SEA can be done very cheaply.

what can i say.. i work hard for my money!

You've been good help mike, i've got about 2 grand just now, so hopefully thetrip can take place in 2008. So i've got plenty time for planning.

How has your trip been so far, any places you'd recommend?

The places i want to go most are india and south america, so i'd happy with just the two but i'm going to see whats cheapest in terms of a round the world ticket.

Where have you been and what kind of ticket did you get? Reply to this
