Would like to ride an elephant in Chiang Mai

Hi! I am going to be in Thailand in January. I would love to go on an elephant ride but I have heard terrible things about the treatment of elephants in the tourism business.

I would love to visit the Elephant Nature Park or the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre for a one day course, but unfortunately I am only in Chiang Mai for 1, possible 2 days and not sure I can fit it in. (Also interested in doing a cooking course.)

Was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is anywhere I can go and ride on an elephant-not on one of those crazy chairs/benches but actually on the elephants neck. Does anyone know of such a place?

If not I might just go and hang out with the elephants somewhere..they seem like awesome creatures!

Any help would be great, thankyou! Reply to this

I recently done a 3 day 2 night trek through the jungle surrounding Chiangmai which was awesome! One of the highlights of my trip...
It included an hour ride on an elephant, two of us on the wooden seat and one girl on the neck. The ride was really uncomfortable for us on the back of the elephant and also for the girl riding on the neck. I think you would find it hard to ride an elephant on your own as it all comes down to money, and if they can fit more tourists on they will.....
I would advise against riding on the elephants and will definitly not be doing it again. A conservation centre would be alot better for you and the elephant :o) Reply to this
