Ok. So I'm in Mexico and speak very little Spanish. However, my lovely boyfriend is Mexican so we are getting by just fine. The problem is, I'm going out of my mind here not being able to make aquaintances and mingle with the other people.

My question is, where do I go to find other English speaking individuals? Do I have to go to Cancun? haha
I would even be up for travelling somewhere just to have casual conversation with others.
Please help.
Reply to this Hi, Im not currently in mexico but in about 2 months we will be moving there. (myself, husband and we have two children). Where in Mx do you live? ..Donna
Reply to this Melanie,
You didn't say where you are in Mexico. It's a big country. There are many pockets of Americans of all ages living in Mexico. We're not hard to find -- even without going to Cancun.
Literally thousands of Americans live in and around Guadalajara and the Lake Chapala area. Many are retired, but by no means all of them.
There are also thousands of us in San Miguel de Allende (Guanajuato). Again, you might have the idea all the ex-pats there are retired, but there's a sizable community of younger Americans--college age and up--living and working in San Miguel. To strike up a conversation in English, all you have to do is sit on a bench in the jardin any morning or head to the patio of the Biblioteca (library). You'll see us everywhere.

Donna Reply to this I'm staying in Martinez de la Torre, Veracruz with my husband until he gets his VISA. I live in Louisiana but am back and forth.
Reply to this Hello Melanie 😊
Go to a few tourist attractions and you will meet plenty of Americans. When I was in Mexico I went on a boat ride which was advertised in the Lonely Planet. I met a bunch of American girls there who I hung out with for a while and they even invited me to a party they were having.
Also you could put a post in the following forum to look for Americans who are traveling in or living in Mexico.

Also try the following site to find American expats in Mexico.

Reply to this Definitely agree that a tourist draw is where you will meet the most English-speaking folks from US, Can, Eur, S, Africa, Aust., etc. Add in that the locals tend to speak much more English for the fact that those who can speak this tongue have a better chance getting a job with direct relations with these tourists = more money. I live part-time in Puerto Vallarta after visiting for years. My condo is small but in a fine neighborhood and our small complex has Americans, Canadians and Mexicans.
Mingle, get around, you will find them. Need I add on that maybe take a course in beginning Spanish? No only assists you but allows you into more of the local culture/customs.

Reply to this Well you are on the right track! Reaching out and doing your homework on the internet is a good place to start. Try finding bloggers living in or near your area. One that comes to mind is Vivaveracruz. If there is an informational website with a forum or message board that is specific to your area, you may be able to find some locals to meet up with or regular tourists to hang out with while they are in town visiting. Spanish language schools serve several worthwhile purposes. You can learn the language so that it is easier to make new friends. Oft times, the teachers will be the first among them. You may also meet other newcomers like yourself or some like-minded travellers to spend time with. Good luck and have fun!!
Reply to this I lived in Mexico for six months and found a few saving graces. I lived in Merida, in the Yucatan. I found an English library run solely by expats, full of books I could understand. It was nice to be able to escape for a while and just relax with good people and good books. The library also offered Spanish classes a few nights a week. Also, I found an English magazine, Yucatan Magazine (I think was the title) filled with all kinds of adventures and advice. A simple google search may help you to find some of these same things in Veracruz. Also, if there is a University in town, you should go check it out. Not only are there bound to be lots of exchange students to talk to, but I've found a lot of Mexican people really like the opportunity to practice their English.
Reply to this actually english is an universally accepted language and you can find any body who speaks english very soon.

There are two missionaries that live close to us that are american..but I havent gotten to talk to them...and everyones right about going to tourist places to find people who speak english. We may be a ways away, but Im up for making eng friends! (it does get tough only watching a little tv in eng and talking on the phone with family!) 😊
Reply to this Have you looked into reasonably priced lessons? Many times I come across a guy or lady who teaches one on one for a small fee and we may become amigos. Great way to advance yourself and open up doors!
Check local bulletin boards for biz cards or in an English published paper with classifieds.

Reply to this Hi Donna I will be moving to Santa Fe next week. Arrived in Toluca 3 weeks ago for a 14 month stay. I would guess that is a shorter drive then a tourist destination.
