Any ideas of what is the best way to do the salt planes tour from La Paz?

Hi,

Does anybody have any good ideas or past experiences of completing the salt lakes tour? Is it best to try and book a tour from La Paz or should you travel to Uyuni first?

I'd appreciate any information

Definitively go to Uyuni first, lots of agencies over there. I had good experiences with an agency called "cordillera" or something like that. I think it was also mentioned in the Lonely Planet. Good food, good places to sleep, no complaints at all. Only i did the trip in reverse from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, they have an office overthere as well. Reply to this

Hey Lynz!
I went from Tupiza and did a 4 day Jeep tour which finished in Uyuni for $140 US. I Went with Valle Hermano, but Tupiza tours are also good (my friends went with them). But if you are coming from La Paz and heading south it may be easier to start in Uyuni and definately book it there. It was freezing in Uyuni so bring warm clothes (esp for the Salar tour),have fun and buy many wool finger puppets! Oh and try the pizza at Minuteman pizza in Uyuni, its the best. Reply to this

Hey Lozzie!!

Good advice! I've read that Tonito Tours are meant to be quite good too. Do you know if they have english speaking guides? Two months til I go and I can not wait!!!

No, sorry im not sure, do you speak any Spanish? If not, you may be lucky enough to have another traveller in the jeep who can speak both English and Spanish, if they dont mind translating for you. Your chances are quite high, there was a wholes load of gringos everywhere. Good luck and have loads of fun! Reply to this

Hi,

I did my tour with Tonito tours and we asked for a tailor made tour as we only had one day. I'm not entirely sure if I asked but we ended up without an English speaking tour guide. Whilst our driver/tour guide was lovely and we were able to get the gist of things from the few Spanish words we knew it would have been a far more successful tour with an English speaking guide. Make sure you ask for one first. Otherwise I wouldn't have any complaints about Tonito.

Hope you have a great time
