Tell me where I should be eating in The Americas
19 years ago, May 9th 2005 No: 1 Msg: #1772
Hi all

On Saturday I start my gastronomic pedal powered tour of The Americas in search of the perfect meal.

You can read more about my plans at www.thehungrycyclist.com

But what I need you do to is tell me where you think I should be eating. Food festivals, local delights, street food. If you think it's the best I want to hear about...

Be safe and be hungry

Hi Tom - welcome to travelblog.org - my Dad sent a link to your site after hearing about your travel plans on the radio - great plan 😊

So my request for you is not until Mexico... (are you going that far?)

In Oaxaca (Oaxaca State - southern Mexico) - seek out and find a local delicacy: Chapulines - more of a pub snack than a full meal. Definetly one to get photos of 😊 Reply to this

If you come to Canada, and go through Calgary, Alberta, you should go to Pete's Drive-Through... Its greasy burgers and fries or onion rings... but SOOO good, and SOoo cheap!!! They give you this massive container of fries for cheap, its tastey *droool*... If you come through Regina, Saskatchewan, a trip to the Milky Way Ice Cream place will defintiy; be a highlight, they have a bazillion flavours, and a different variety of dips each day, and flavour of the day, its so good. There is also a vast quantity of really cute, really tastey, pretty cheap restaurants along Whyte Ave in Edmonton, Alberta... thats all from this Canadian Correspondant... hopefully this helps!

I'm from AK, and if you're doing a foodie tour of the Americas, you can't pass up fresh wild Alaskan salmon. Homer, where I grew up, I think will fulfill both parts of your trip: It is at the end of the road on the tip of the Kenai peninsula (250 mi from Anchorage), and one of the prettiest roads I have ever been on, and also is world famous for halibut and salmon. You could go to a restaurant, the best for seafood being Cups Cafe, The Homestead Restaurant, the Rookery (in Otter Cove across the bay) and the Saltry (in Halibut Cove across the bay). However, the absolute ABSOLUTE best fish I ever had was red salmon I caught myself, putted over to a beach, wrapped it in sea grass and threw on a smoky fire for twenty minutes or so. The sea grass is wet and salty, and the heat from the fire basically steams the fish, locking in the salt and smoke taste. Long story short: Go hang out on the Spit and talk to the locals, make a friend, and get them to take you fishing. This is better than the charter outfits, but you have to be a friendly easygoing sort of person to pull it off. Also it is cost effective-you just need to pitch in for gas and Snickers. Anyway, have fun! Reply to this

Well in Florida, you have to get the seafood. My suggestion is Lake Alfred, FL-Gary's Seafood. Best oysters in the entire world even if it is hole in the wall. Otherwise, go to Ybor City in Tampa. Plenty of places to walk and see. They have a market there too. There's also the Cuban food. La Carreta in Miami is great for this.
In Tennessee...there's some great places. Bennet's Pit BBQ in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. The Soda Fountain in Gatlinburg (old style with phosphates) is another favorite. In Maryville, go to Aubrey's for peanut butter fried catfish. In Knoxville, The Mellow Mushroom has great fondu. Hmm... Nashville and Memphis also have great Southern food offerings.
North Carolina, the eastern seaboard here has wonderful offerings.

Hmm, upstate New York will render fantastic Italian food. The good Mexican is in the Southwestern US like Arizona. Cody, Wyoming will render buffalo burgers and other delicacies like Rocky Mountain Oysters. Then there's indian fry bread up in North Dakota. Reply to this

If you stop in New Orleans, Deannie's for seafood. Or mother's for po-boys and muffelatas on the cheap. Reply to this
