Those of you who have rented cars to drive through Guatemala, any suggestions?

Best road atlas/map?
Main roads?
Routes?
Crossing into Belizian border? or any other border.
Type of vehicle?
Gas or Diesel?
...and any other suggestions will be most welcomed and highly appreciated! Reply to this

There is one company that would let you cross from Belize to Guatemala and back, but I think none do the opposite of for any other borders. Sorry. Guatemala has lots of buses and shuttles, and a large deductible for damages to rental cars. I have been there many times, but have never rented. Reply to this

I know i'm late replying to this but for anyone interested International Travel Maps has a great roadmap of Guatemala. I drove around much of Guatemala in June 2008 and had no problems at all. Rented a SUV and recommend a vehicle larger than a standard car for Guatemala if you go off the MAIN roads. Cities look closer together than actual drive time's. Reply to this
