Imagine have access to the internet from your hand held PC, or your Laptop from anywhere in the world that you can currently get a mobile phone signal... sounds good? to me sounds great since my work needs internet access and my passion is travel.

Well this isn't pure speculation - this technology is just starting to emerge! WiMax.

Working in a similar way to WiFi, Intel are about to announce a chip that includes WiMax in the same the current generation of mobile chips include WiFi.

Now this is where it will get interesting - in the developing world telephony has been made possible by the advent of mobile technology, go to China and no one has a fixed line, everyone has a mobile ! - it's much cheaper to add the infrastructure for mobile telephones than fixed lines, it's very easy to understand why. A fixed line requires a wire to run from the exchange of the phone company to every subscriber - that's a lot of wire. Mobile phone infrastructure requires nothing more than the installation of a base station - a transmitter and receiver, a small tower.

WiMAX will do for Broadband internet connectivity what mobile telephony has done for telephony in the developing world! revolutionise it.

Now that and the introduction of hydrogen fuel cells for laptops is really going to change things 😊
