I'm in Delhi and would like to buy a cheap, laptop that I'll only use for word processing and wireless internet. Can anyone help with suggestions of where to go to buy and what laptop would be best for backpacking ie, light-weight, durable with long battery life? Thanks Reply to this

Hi

I am from Delhi. The best place to purchase a laptop in Delhi is Nehru Place, in South Delhi. It is stated to be the biggest electronic market in Asia and apart from a special sale elsewhere which are advertised in the newspapers, you could get the best prices there. You could also have a look at the website of that market. The address is:
http://www.nehruplaceithub.com/

The prices of laptops start from Rs 30,000/- ($ 800) onwards, probably lower for the older models. The lowest priced ones would be Acer laptops followed by some HP models. However, the lowest priced ones are 14.1" models which would weigh around 2.8 kg. If you want to purchase really light laptops (less than 2 kg), they would be much costlier, upwards of Rs 75,000/- ($ 2000 or so). The lighter ones come in screen sizes of 12.1" or lower.

There is a wide variety of models available and it is best to see for yourself and purchase. You should also ensure that the seller is an authorized dealer of the manufacturer and the laptop carries a global warranty (since you would be taking it along in your travels).

All the best for your purchase.

Hi Alok,

Thanks a million for your post. The info is really useful. I had come across that website but wasn't sure if it was a physical place or online only. I'll check it out when I get back to Delhi.
