I didn't have to go very far when the winter olympics came to my home town in 2010! I did security detail, so got to see a lot of the venues and watch the events for free. It was electric and intense! Not sure if I would travel for an olympics though, as its not really why I travel. Reply to this

Nothing other than the obvious, book accoms far in advance. Have a game plan for the events you want must see, some were missed due to long distances between venues, I heard in Brazil lineups were so security saturated that people missed the events. Dress for the weather, venue food is super expensive and long lines, better to bring snacks. Don't expect volunteers to speak english in other countries. Make sure you get tickets for closing cermonies! Reply to this

I've been to 3 Summer Olympics, and would love to see a winter version.

The secret with an Olympics are tickets and accommodation. Tickets you do need to book a long way in advance, or you may be lucky and find fellow spectators who are tired and don't want to see all the events they have tickets for - this is very true in the 2nd week of the games.

For accommodation, book very late. There is always an oversupply of accommodation in Olympic cities and a few days before the games start, prices plummet. I was able to get accommodation in both Sydney and Beijing this way for a cost that was around a quarter to a third of the price being charged by hotels a week or so before the Opening Ceremony.
