Have you ever experienced the longest railway trip of this world? Yes, I am talking about Trans-siberian Railway.
It's my dream! I have a long wish to go for this exciting railway journey someday. So far I know, someone can start this journey from Europe through connecting rail and then from all the way of Russia it can be end in China. Or trip can be shorter depends on time & budget. I have a plan to start from Moscow & will finish in Beijing. However, It would be great to hear from you about your experience! How you have done this? For how long you have travelled, what was the starting and ending point? How much does it cost? How differently someone can do that or what to keep in mind choosing route? Or any other information if you like to share.
Thanks
Reply to this Yes it was a trip of a lifetime! I did the reverse, Beijing to Moscow and I continued to St. Petersburg. It was very entertaining and interesting. I got on and off several times and stayed in many towns along the route. That was the best part. I was warned food was bad, but I found lots of great snacks and food options sold by grandmothers at the stations. Hot water on board is provided for tea and noodles, food was terrible in dining car. I drank a lot of vodka with Russian passengers. It was very a very expensive trip but worth it. I would have preferred more time in Mongolia, but that's me. I blogged about my trip, so please go and have a read!
Reply to this Aw well thanks, I'm glad I changed your mind. Your love for adventure and meeting new people will definitely be fulfilled on this train trip!
Reply to this It's on my bucket list. I love reading people's blogs on it. One of the reasons we learned some (terrible) Russian back in Odessa was to understand the signs and people for most of the route.
The man in Seat 61 is a good resource by the looks of it.
Reply to this I travelled on the Trans-Siberian 10 years ago this summer, and I'd do it again at the drop of a hat, maybe in the winter next time :-)
I won't bother mentioning costs as they'll have changed so much by now, but I booked all of my tickets as I went along, at the local train stations. This was a lot cheaper than people who booked it overseas and allowed me to be flexible with route, timings, etc.. I picked the train up in Murmansk, through to St Petersburg, then the Trans-Sib from Moscow to Tomsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Ulan Bataar then Beijing. I travelled in 2nd and 3rd class to get different experiences, met loads of interesting people from Russia and beyond. Bought all the food (fish, noodles, beer) from the ladies on the station platforms and made lots of tea with the hot water in the samovar. Dining car hospitality was dodgy. Provodnitsas (who look after the carriages) rule the roost, don't get in their way when they're vacuuming and lights out at 10pm!

Reply to this We love train travel. There are so many amazing trains in the world.
We took the Indian Pacific Railway from Sydney to Perth. We loved every minute.
We've been thinking of the Trans-Siberian railway. We also want to take the Copper Canyon Railway in Mexico.
Trains, trains and more trains.... so romantic.
