We've got 10 days off to get as far away (and back!) from home as possible. Where to??
My boyfriend and I have 10 days off from work and we want to do some adventuring! Our daydream is to get from Edmonton, AB to California, with our only must-stop in Vegas. Is this even possible to do in 10 days? I know it's going to be a LOT of driving in a short amount of time, and we'll have to bypass tons of cool sights, but it'd be pretty sweet! What are your opinions about this?? Our tentative route is to just head south through Montana to Salt Lake City, then on to Vegas, LA, San Fran, the home. Obviously stopping somewhere between San Fran and home. Think it's even worth it? Or would be it be better/less stressful to just take our time in Utah where there are plenty of cool things to check out?
Reply to this Driving to LA, Las Vegas, and San Francisco likely isn't possible. Seeing two of them IS, but will push your driving endurance to the limits. Both San Franciso and Las Vegas are around 1500 miles from Edmonton. Las Vegas to LA is half a day, LA to San Francisco is one day. Las Vegas to San Francisco can be done in one day too.
I've done a 1500 mile drive in two days. I spent every hour but three in the car, and was absolutely exhausted by the end. Your fatigue will probably be less because you can split up the driving. Think carefully about the level of effort needed; I needed much more than I ever anticipated. Assuming you are up for it, and pick only two cities, that means five days of pure driving and five days of touring.
Utah, particularly southern Utah, and western Montana are both great areas. If I had to pick, I would see stuff in Utah/western Montana to and from Las Vegas, and break up the driving. Zion National Park takes one day off the Interstate (although many people take more) and Yellowstone/Grand Teton can be reached in half a day each way.
The other option is to fly to Las Vegas, pick up a cheap rental, and see all three cities. With proper timing this will reduce the travel time to four days, with much less fatigue, leaving six for touring.

Reply to this We agree with Erza that it would be tough to accomplish this in your given time period. You would drive along some beautiful country side but you would not have the time to stop and check out anything.
We agree with Erza's suggetions.
Another possibility is to spend the entire two weeks exploring LA, SF and the coast in between. There are some amazing drives and cute towns.
The Salt Lake City, Vegas options is a good one.
Please let us know what you decide.
We hope you will blog about your trip.
