Looking for some help and advice
11 years ago, October 18th 2012 No: 1 Msg: #162173
Hi there.
I am a newbie here, looking to get some practice at Travel Writing before studying an English degree next year.
I was just looking to see if anyone had any tips for a newbie like me?
I have posted my first blog but have not had many views or any comments yet.
Thanks for the help!

Hello Tilly, I think your recent blog (When in Rome) when you suggest how using the senses gives a person the most from a travelling experience, the same applies to writing a blog.

In my most recent blog, Gazing into the Mouth of Hell, on visiting a volcano, I used senses a lot, and summarise it in this sentence: An active volcano is a visceral experience that kindles every sense – one can hear the roaring vents, smell the sulphur, taste the air, feel the trembling ground, and see a display without peer.

I like to read through different blogs, both to get ideas for trips and to see different writing styles. Writers with several followers tend to be popular, so its worth looking at them first.

Personally, I like stream of conciousness writing with lots of detail, enough to feel I'm immersed in a destination. I include lots of history and stories in my own blogs.

Having said all that, most of my page views are in the high single digits, so salt accordingly. Reply to this

Your style is similar to our resident master portrait photographer, Dancing Dave.

I don't think you'll be single digits for much longer, I've just nominated you here: Blogger Of The Week - Nominations. That will increase your visibility.

It is amazing how many times a blogger with great talent is "discovered" even though they have been a member on the site for years! I'm impressed that you have written more than 200 blogs, I haven't cracked the century yet! Reply to this

Thanks for the endorsement 😊 I drove a nine month US roadtrip last year, hence lots of blog posts. Reply to this

Hello and welcome Tilly, I read both of your blogs and especially enjoyed the Traveling in Style blog. I can only speak for myself and don't claim to be an expert. When I read my early blogs, I cringe. I didn't have a style or rhythm to my writing. The more I blogged, the more I found that if I wrote my blogs as if I were telling my stories to someone (I always picture telling my brother my stories) the better I felt they were. Enthusiasm shows up in the stories and I find myself painting pictures with words instead of just writing. And please know I am not saying anything negative towards your writing, simply sharing what I find works for me. Good luck and have a heck of a lot of fun on here. This really is a great community.
