Can anyone recommend a good beach-side guest house? (plus tips for other destinations and trains)
We're arriving in Arambol next Thursday (21st Dec) and so far have only been able to make contact with the Oasis Guest House. Does anyone know what the rooms are like there or can you recommend other places to stay?
Other accomodation recommendations for Hampi, Mysore and Alleppey also gratefully received and for the backwaters motorboat or not? (for 1 night)
One last thing, so far we're on waiting lists for all the trains, has anyone been on a waiting list before but managed to make it onto the train?

Reply to this I think for Hampi we just winged it. As I recall, there's not a lot of internet cafes nor internet connections in Hampi. I don't think the places fill up that quickly in Mysore so you should be able to find accomodation. Most of the hotels are about a 20-25 min walk or a quick rickshaw ride away.
If you can'd make it onto the trains, you can try to take the local bus from Panaji to Hampi. Its quite the local experience riding a rickety school bus packed full with people in the aisles standing in cramped vinyl seats that glue to your legs after 12 hours.
