Proof of return or onward tickets to enter the United States

Hello,

I am planning to go to the United States in September, and I've heard that you won't be let into the country if you have no proof of a return ticket.

Thing is, I plan to enter from Los Angeles, then leave via New York - but not returning to my home country. I'm departing Sydney, arriving in LA, leaving the US via New York and going to England, before going back home.

What can I do to make sure this won't be a problem for me? Do I need to purchase absolutely everything before leaving for my trip? That's a lot of planning. Surely at least, indicating that I'm going to the UK afterwards isn't going to be a problem? Or are they going to be a pain in the arse and ask when I plan to leave the UK as well and be expected to show my ticket from the UK back to Australia?

I wanted to buy the ticket from the UK back to Australia WHILE in the US, before leaving New York... Otherwise, I'm planning every detail before I even start my journey, and that's so much more effort. I need flexibility.

Could I perhaps purchase a return ticket to LA, then cancel the return portion upon entering?

Please help, and thanks. I just need to make sure I can minimise the risk of being denied entry as much as I can.

Saki

I don't think they want proof of a return ticket - I think they just want proof of an onward ticket out of the US, so you should be fine as long as you already have your ticket from New York to England. Reply to this

Thanks for your reply. 😊

An additional question:

Since I am transiting in Honolulu, will I be checked by immigration there, or at the actual point of entry in LA? Reply to this

I would think Honolulu but I don't know for sure - hopefully someone with more knowledge of this will chip in. Reply to this
