Where to start on a world trip?
13 years ago, November 19th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #123286
My husband and I are fairly new independent travellers. We are doing our first world trip next year, taking it slow over a couple of years (hopefully).

My questions for those who have done this already - Where is a good place to start? We are from Australia and looking at doing Asia, US/Canada, Europe, South America.

We will be travelling on a budget of course. We are both too old (grrr) to gain work legally (34 & 36).

This is a long time dream mine and I am hoping for advise in any areas from those who are more experienced in travel.

Thank you! Reply to this

Hey

There are two ways to look at it. Asia is significantly more expensive than Europe and the US/Canada. So you could either go to Asia first, and the time when you will probably blow more money cos everything is new and exciting, and then go to the more expensive places when you are better at managing a budget. Or you could go to the expensive places first and then go to Asia when your funds are running low. You can definitely travel further for longer for less money in Asia.

So you could look at going Oz,Asia, Europe, US/Canada, South America,Oz. Or Oz, US/Canada, South America, Europe, Asia.

You are not legally allowed to work in the US, Canada or Europe, but you can work in Asia or South America if you have degrees and want to teach English. That's one way to travel slowly, spending 6 months-a year in different countries, earning money and seeing the country you are in and the ones around it.

I would start in South America and go up to the us and Canada...then fly to europe from canada cuz it is very cheap and make my way home by asia...it really depends on what kind of travel you wanna do and where you really wanna go. I like doing my most go place first...Do you want to go to Africa? Reply to this

Hey guys,

Congrads on the decision to start to travel 😊 How about a little travel around Australia first.. You mention that you have not done this before so maybe consider just going for some time to a place in Australia that you wish you have before and try to 'rough' it a little.. May sound silly but may give you a little heads up before jumping into Asia or South America.

Hey there,

Myself and a friend just started doing a big bit of travel by leaving from Australia. Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are excellent travel hubs to go anywhere in the world at very reasonable prices.

I agree with 'Rat on the Road', Asia is also by far the cheapest place we have ever travelled so it would be a great place to start travelling cheaply, and you will feel the pinch every time you move onto more expensive areas. Singapore and Malaysia are great places to start travelling as they are small, safe and well travelled and you will gain confidence quickly booking hotels and tours, ready for more daunting places like India and Nepal.

We flew from Cairns to Singapore then up to Bangkok and into Nepal in October. Nepal is a great place for adventurous people so if you fancy a nice trek I'd go there!

Then you could try India, easily accessible from Nepal or fly back to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur heading for some other region or other places in Asia itself...

All about the gateway cities like London in Europe, Singapore in Asia, Abu Dhabi in the Middle East etc

hope this helps!

Hey There
Exciting times ahead!

We would recommend routes similar to above, starting in the more expensive coutries and making your way round to Asia last. We did a similar route and it meant that at the end we could stay in Asia as long as we wanted as we didn't have to worry about saving heaps of cash for more expensive destinations.

We still lived on a budget but it meant that if we wanted the odd extravagance then we could do it. This way also it means that you are likely to visit the cold coutries first (obviously depending on when you go) so take cold weather gear then you can dump it/send it back when you get to Asia.

Hope this helps Reply to this

Nicole,

Welcome to TravelBlog. We can't wait until you are on the road blogging about your trip.

I think you should start at the farthest point and work your way back toward home. If you budget well you will be fine but if you should run out of money it is always easier to take your second trip to the places that are closer to you. With that said I would make a list of the three places that are must see. The three places that you will be disappointed if get back home and have not been to them on this trip.

Teaching along the way has helped many people extend their stay.
