Advice about tours, cooking lessons, accommodation in Northern Thailand?

I will be in Thailand for about 10 days. I want to spend at least 2 days in Bangkok. I've found a few tours that cover Northern Thailand in about 4-6 days....However, I've also been warned to be aware of booking with some of these companies as they try to charge other items to tourists' credit cards.

Can anyone offer some addvice on tours that give a comprehensive tour of Northern Thailand...and in particular the Karen (Long neck) hilltribes?

Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I went with Geckos. They were ok when it came to the tour, and they visited the Karen hilltribes. The tour itself was relatively cheap compared to some, but there were a lot of things, like meals that had to be added on top. The guide was local, which was good in some ways, and not so good in others - you felt like you could ask questions on local customs etc and get an honest answer, but you also sometimes felt like you were a tourist, and therefore thought of as never going to be able to appreciate Thai ways because of it, and some of the extras you had to pay for were questionable. But I was in the minority with those thoughts on the tour, and I think most of the people on it would have recommended it to anyone else. They have quite a detailed web-site which may help?

Hi Anne,

I can recommend 2 tour companies i used from Chiang Mai, but they may operate from other towns as well. One was ChiangDao.com I went to see Karen long neck tribe with them and elephant trekking, rafting and you can stay at their beautiful Chiang Dao Nest - amazing views and beautiful food. The other was Journey Tours, booked through Chiang Mai Information Bureau, and with them i did a tour of the border towns of northern thailand - in one day 8am - 10pm (for 900 Baht)! I have a blog if you want to take a look. SamC Reply to this
