Pending trip to the States and have heard visas are now required.
We are UK Passport holders and have heard we have to apply for a visa waiver in advance of travel - any advice on this would be appreciated.

Yes, holders of U.K passports (and a host of others) that travel under the visa waiver program now have to complete the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) application before they go.
Here is the
website as listed on the U.S Dept of Homeland security webpage. I've heard it's a fairly quick and easy process, but that you just have to remember to take those additional steps now.
