Planning my trip to India

Leaving in August. Where to start?
14 years ago, March 24th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #107171
Hello everyone,

I am planning to travel to India. I would like to cover as much as possible, so the south, around Chennay, down to Kerala and up again towards Mumbai and up again towards the desert and the area around Delhi. If possible I would also like to cover the Gange delta and Calcutta.

The problem is I finish my employment end of June and so I would like to leave in August, which I know is not the best month to travel there. Where would be a good place to start? The Himalayas perhaps? Has anyone done that part? If anybody has any suggestion of what a tentative itinerary could be I would be extremely grateful as India is so big and I find it very hard to make a plan.

I am planning to stay for six months (Visa permitting - I heard you have to leave the country after three months and can only reenter it after two months away).

Thanks for any tips

Dear Pamela,

Thanks for willing to visit kolkata during visiting India. Welcome to Kolkata the former capital of India and present capital of West Bengal( A state of India). But I would also request you to keep few days in your hand visiting Sunderban (the largest Delta in the east), Bishnupur( the terracota artcraft made of Mud to describe our apic story) and North Bengal.

Hope You will enjoy visting India.

Wish you good health and regards,

Hello Pamela

Thanks for choosing such a vast, culturally diversified country called India. We Indians welcome you and will wait for you.

You can start by arriving in Mumbai, Ajanta caves, then go to Goa, Dwarka ji, cover South India including Puri, Kochi and move to Kolkata. Try to go to central India before moving to north India in Himalayan range.

Hi

From our experience, I'd suggest starting in the north at this time of year as the south will be HOT. We haven't been any higher than Amritsar previously but are planning to revisit Kashmir this summer (july-august) which I believe is a good time to be there.

We were in Kerala/Karnataka/Goa around Feb-March and some places were still a bit hot but this should be one of the best times for that area as well.

Hi Pamela,

I would suggest you to start from the Himalayas and then do the plains, because the month of August is full of humidity after the monsoon. You have a plenty of times to explore the Indian destinations.

One thing you'll love about the country is the colorful culture and the loving people all around. While making a list of cities to travel, must include the name of Eastern India, destination of Darjeeling and Sikkim. I found them a really beautiful place on earth.
Some from north India are , Mcleaodganj, Dharamshala, Sri Nagar and Manali and Shimla, Nainital and from the south Kerala the beaches of Goa and Mumbai.. everything is possible in India.. 😊, check out some best deals at also go to the Maldives, for maldives you can check at mysrilankan.co.uk.. this will help you a lot to get the best deals.

Thanks..

Sandy, I might be interested in volunteering for an NGO, depending on the type of NGO (I am only interested in local ones, no big names), the type of work they do, location and duration of the programme (striclty short term as my main aim is travelling). Please send me some info. Reply to this

wooww spam much!! This happens to me everytime I post something about India as well! :x

We're going to be in India around the same time as you, coming in from Nepal in the north (is our plan right now) sometime in August or September. I think we're going to be in the north for a few months, (I would check out Darjeeling, as mentioned above, supposed to be amazing.... and the location for 'The Darjeeling Limited" which is a great movie!!!)
We are also planning on 6 months. hopefully traveling around for 4 months or so and then finding somewhere to volunteer for awhile (depending on how much we enjoy it, we're leaving time to do this for 2 months if we choose).
as for volunteering, We've met a few people who have done this in the country, mostly on farms and teaching english. It seems very easy to volunteer in India, there are some companies that can "teach" you how to volunteer in India, for a fee, before you go out into the real world of volunteering. I don't think this is necessary, from what I hear it's easy enough to walk up to most places and sign up (I'm sure they check you our first depending on what you want to do). We're hoping to be able to teach english, and I would really like to work in an orphanage or with under-privalged children.
Maybe our paths will cross in this amazing country!! 😊

hmm .well i donno about volunteering in india , in india NGO are limited in few places . so , hard to find where to work , even you work , the pay will be less , according to your currency . 1 :60 times . its differs a lot here . well its a great idea to plan from the north . hope u enjoy it , well depends on how u manage it , coz all states of india have different culture and languages ,so u dont require a dictionary for every thing , if u using dictonary they u have to buy alteast 10 diff dictonary .lolz . better suggestion is use english , but speak slow ,so that people can understand it , well in cities u wont find problem ,coz all know basic english , its difficult to find in rural area. so for security purpose always take the help of govt ,which are provided by govt of India in many places , they will guide u as good . so google urself . in google.in .. search govt help for travels , travel to india + govt of india , something else , southerntravelsindia , indiantorurism, tourist govt package . ... google it in google.in not google.uk , u get better results .

--- so , get down to delhi , without thinking anything , well it will be good for u , rather than getting down in mumbai , doing so u can travel from top to u can travel from top to bottom , traveling from center is quite difficult moving up and down , will cost u lot of time , india is not so small , its really big , and u feel big here . :D , coz there are no bullet trains and not so advanced or not so sophisticated , India is a natural country with natural thinking with natural resources . well this are the top destination , btw there are many to count , well traveling in way u will notice lot of things , so giving the top destination names .
Delhi -Agra - Fatehpur Sikri - Jaipur - Ajmer - Udaipur - Chennai - Mahabalipuram - Tanjore - Trichy - Madurai - Thekkady - Kumarakom - Cochin - Mysore - Bangalore - Goa - Mumbai.

forget the name of the wonder place , where i want to visit in future , its kashmir . well the place of conflict bet ind and pak (LOC ) but its not so dangerous , its more peaceful than hearing rumors in news . well its seems u are going to stay for long time . hope u have enough money to spend , coz of india population the GDP is divided , so in chart the exchange rate looks very cheap . but in cities like mumbai , delhi , all other main cities have high expenditure . the inflation rate of india is 13% which is the highest rate in the world . thinking so . if u really want to look every place , go to google , and list the states of india , there are aournd 28 states , and each states have a density of europiean country . so its like travelling countries over countries . btw if u want to get into deep travelling , get the name of the state and start searching the top destination, tourist, etc of (state names) , its give brief list of core areas .lol best of luck for the journey .

dont travel alone , atleast have a friend with u as a company , u wont get bored during travelling , i have seen some of the them travel alone . to many parts of the country , it could be risking ur life and valvuble things , ^_^ Reply to this

Actually The Darjeeling Limited was made mostly around Udaipur I believe. A friend that I took to India recently thought all the trains in India were like that film. Reply to this
