To go to India was one of my dreams for a long time. Now, March 2010 finaly i am going to do it. I am very excited as well as a bit worrying as i will be traveling alone. i am planning to be a guide to myself and will travel aroun for 1month. Do i need to book a hotel in advance? Is it safe to travel alone? However, i hope to meet some nice people there...
Pls give me any tips... Thank you

Hello Dainora 😊

I think it is safe to travel in India alone. I have been there 3 times, twice alone.

Sexual harassment and even gropings are a bit too common. Dress in long flowy clothes, that cover everything, to minimise it. And always stand and sit near women rather than men in public places. And if you are planning to travel overnights, then get first class train tickets, if you dont mind too much splashing out the extra money. There are way fewer sleezos in the first class train compartments.

If you are staying in budget accomodation, you wont be able to book in advance. I generally just show up. If you are staying at places that costs 15+ Euros per night, you will likely be able to book in advance. I would book in advance if I was staying at the not budget places.

A copy of the Lonely Planet guide to India may be a useful purchase for you. As well as lots of practical information about accomodation and transport, it has lots of advice about safety and health.

Hi Mel,

Thank you for your reply so much. Every single little detail for me is important 😊
Could i ask you few more questions: what about the money? Is it easy to find a cash mashine there? What currency to keep: euro or INR is better?
Any point to take my laptop there? are there any interenet coffee's?

Thank you so much 😊

All the best 😊

Cash machines are found in the larger cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bangalore but are rarer in other places, so stock up on cash when you can.

INR are the way to go, however some tourist sites are priced in US Dollars, so try to bring a few of those along as well (mixture of denominations and newer notes).

Unsure about the Internet situation with your own computer - there are plenty of Internet cafe's around though. Reply to this

What I did was change 500 Euros on arrival at Delhi airport. That produced enough Rupees for my 2 trips to India. Be careful that you are not given damaged notes. A lot of vendor, restaurants etc wont take them, and not all banks will exchange them for undamaged ones.

Internet cafes are everywhere. But, beware of paying for things on the internet with a credit card in them. They are not always secure and keylogging and email password theft is a possibility. Change your email and TravelBlog passwords often, if you are using internet cafes. I personally would avoid taking a laptop, unless you need it for work. Leaving it at home would mean one less item to tempt thieves.

Here is a thead which may interest you.

Don't keep much money in cash with you....and just avoid to travel dark street in night except that all thinngs is ok for alone travellers.

May I ask to where you heading for? do you plan to cover whole of India or going to cover some region like North ,south, east or west region.

we had a fantastic trouble free time in India. Met lots of solo travellers and no problems reported.
the big cities might be a bit daunting at first but once you have the hang of it everything becomes second nature.
a few tips from memory but not exhaustive!
a padlock and chain can be useful for your pack on sleeper trains/buses
some alcohol gel for washing hands
don't eat meat!
have a look at our blogs and the hundreds of others and if you have any specific questions give us a shout

Hi Dainna ,

India is safe to travel alone, if you can follow some activities: -

1. do not wear minis' (skirts or shorts) at public places.
2. do bargain for anything and everything in india
3. avoid eating anywhere, prefer clean restaurants, however, there are some local DHABAS where you can have some delicious food, especially delhi and Gujarat
4. be careful about your money bag and your luggage (lock your bags with small locks available in the market.

All the best

Sam

If you need any furthur help , one of my friend lives in Delhi he can assist you.

I agree with most of the advice given by Mell and Sam, may be not everything.

Yes, avoid mini skirts, not becasue people are sex demons here, but becasue they had a different upbringing. Actually, its no longer a threat as you can see many young girls wearning shirts, they are getting mini every year, though still not as europeon. People are getting broad minded.

Second, you need to take all that care that one must take when travelling alone, irrespective of which country it is.

Yes, Sam is right on hygeine, do not drink any water or eat anywhere. Your system will not accept. So, drink good quality bottled water like Bisleri, Kinley, Aquafina...these are easily available at retail shops.

One point, inspite of low hygeine levels the cases of food poisoning in India are less becasue we eat everything well cooked and hot. So, my advice is you eat from a place, which is considerably occupied as your chances of getting fresh food there are more and try and choose dishes that are served hot. Do not try your hand at cold cuts or cut fruits etc. Simply, eat what feels good thru eyes and nose, they are the best judge. First eyes then nose and then hands and then tounge. Follow the sequence and you will never fall sick of eating.

Mell is right about Internet cafe's. Do not use your Credit Card there too often. If you need to use CC online, carry one with a lowere limit. This actually is true for every country now as Cyber Crime takes ugly shape.

Last, my advice will be you travel to East of India first, it is amazingly and breathtakingly beautiful. I am talking of places like Sikkim, Shillong, Manipur, Chirapunji, Darjelling. From here you can visit Nepal and Bhutan. Then come back to India, may be Kolkata and take off to Varanasi, Agra, Delhi, Jaipur, Pushkar, Mumbai, Goa etc.

I hope I could add some value here. I will try and answer if there are more queries. Reply to this
