I have read with interest the various responses people have to this post, and i must say i agree with most of them, it really has alot to do with your attitude and the way you perceive the behaviour of many chinese people in China.

I am a black 24 year old working as an esl teacher in China, and i must say that i have many black friends here teaching as well, and some of them honestly cannot be bothered by the stares and jeers, they just go on with their own lives, and that makes for a pleasant stay in China. Some on the other hand cannot stand it ,for me i have found that somehow i cannot get past it, i dont know if it is a psychological issue in my own mind or if it really is that bad.

Every day i experience stares, pointing, laughing (for me this is the worst, because it's so humiliating) and jeers. I do completely understand those who say it is curiosity, but does curiosity involve laughing at someone, i don't care what culture you come from but that is just plain rude and i believe most of them know it. They will stand there and laugh whilst pointing and i always wonder what exactly is so hilarious about a black person.

In any case expect alot of attention, how you will feel about it is really up to you, as i said many dont really care and i envy them if i could walk the streets and ignore all of that i would live in China forever because its a beautiful country, but i have failed to adapt so i guess its back home for me when my contract ends. I don't know how the Chinese got this reputation for being racist to black people but it thoroughly undeserved. I am a black person and I do not recall experiencing any racism whilst in China. In fact even though a black person is a very uncommon sight in China most did their best to avoid staring. That doesn't mean racists don't exist in China but then they exist in all societies. Hi, have just come out of China.... people will stare and point and talk about you but they do it will all foreigners so don't feel its just you, its because they are interested and isn't meant to make you feel uncomfortable. I found Chinese people very friendly and I felt very safe travelling through China on my own - probably safer than I would feel at home! My 17 year old sister will be going there this summer. Have a great time and be prepared to try lots of new experiences :D x Reply to this

Chinese people are very friendly, very enthusiastic, which you do not worry. I have been to many places in the world, the beginning I would have some worries, when I was there when it knows that it is redundant, you will find difficulties, they certainly have plenty of good-hearted people to help you. " I guess in your next post you will talk about human rights, environment, corruption, or something else. save it. they are not the problems of china" Sounding a little defensive E li. No one was talking politics, but you. However now that you mention it, how nice it is must to be able to voice an opinion without fear of retaliation. I wish I could speak my mind, but I live in People's Republic. Reply to this
