I purchased a one way ticket to Peru with the intention of travelling from there to other countries in South America. I am a US citizen and hold a vaild US passport, however i am told that without proof of "return or onward travel" i will be deported when i arrive and possibly not allowed on the plane to Peru at all! can anyone shed any light on this subject? there has to be a way to get around this... Hello Tom 😊

Officially you are probably supposed to have an exit ticket, but the immigration in many countries usually dont ask to see it. I dont think you will have problems there.

You might have trouble with the airline you are flying with, though. Sometimes they dont want to let people on the flights, if they havent got a return ticket.

You could probably just ask the airline you are flying with what their policies on this are, before you buy the tickets. Surely, some of them are starting to get used to the idea of onward travel overland, by now. 😊

yes i checked with the airline i am flying and they said they do require a return ticket or proff of onward travel, they suggested that i buy a fully refundable one way ticket back to the states from lima just to show them so that i can board, and once i get to peru simply cancel it. i wonder if that is as easy as it sounds... I cant imagine they give a refund, when you cancel...... They probably mean you should just not get on the return flight. Reply to this

Yes, you can get a fully refundable ticket and return it for a refund. Just check the specific terms and conditions of the airline, i.e. refundable for $$ and not further travel. Reply to this

thanks for the responses guys...i appreciate it. i think i am sorted now, i guess all i really need is to buy a one way refundable ticket so i can exit the US, once you get to peru it is not an issue to have onward travel plans according to the people i've talked to and a brand new travel book i consulted yesterday. hello!!

im in Peru right now... when i entered no one asked to see anyproof of anything at all... but what i advice you to do, why dont you get a bus ticket from mexico back in US for example..something low priced! then you can say that you are travelling in land until mexico and then you´ll enter Us..u dont need to take that Bus later on, but you can use the reservation as a proof!!

enjoy your travel 😊 Reply to this
