suggestions needed for a big solo trip
14 years ago, August 24th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #84159
hello! I am a single 20 yr old female traveler and I'm cooking up some ideas for a little adventure! I have done a fair bit of traveling, however, never solo. I'm excited to try this independently but any tips for a single girl would be greatly appreciated. My rough idea right now is to head to Australia for the month of January, Southeast Asia for 2-3 months, India and Nepal for 1-2 months, and parts of Eastern Europe for a month to be gone for about 5 or 6 months in total.

I've checked out the round the world tickets, and I'm getting prices around 3500-4000 for my very rough itinerary - does this sound about right? What site is most popular for the tickets? Any other suggestions?

What kind of budget am I looking at here? How easy would it be to work in any of these places for a short amount of time? ie. in a hostel or teaching english etc. Would any tours be worth booking? ANY advice is greatly appreciated, I'm open to any ideas here. Thanks!!

Hey,
I don't know what site you're looking at for round the world tickets, but you should check out airtreks.com. Just put in all your destinations and it will give you an approximation on price.
I'm not sure about being able to work overseas because it depends where you're from. I know Australians can work in Europe easier than someone from the states could. A lot of hostels do offer jobs, but some make you stay a minimum amount of time, so check it out before you go.
Im not sure where you're going in Europe, but I know in places like Germany, and Paris 'New Europe' offers free tours of the cities. Check it out at neweuropetours.eu
Hope this helps! Reply to this

Hello Worldlove 😊

As a female traveller I think you will have very few problems in Australia, South East Asia and Europe. Well, incidents sometimes happen, but that is not frequent. India is a different story. Be careful what you wear. I dont know anything about Nepal.

I'm getting prices around 3500-4000

Which currency is this?

You could probably get short term work in Australia and in European countries where you speak the language.

I wouldnt book too many tours. Use guide books such as the Lonely Planet to help you decide what you would like to do in each country. There may be some tours worth taking, but mostly I think you could get around without them, and that would also be more economical.

Budget
Australia and Europe -30 to 60 Euros per day, not including intercity transport.
SE Asia and India - 10 to 20 Euros per day including intercity transport.
Allow some money for visas and maybe 100 per month for emergencies, replacements.... if you can.

Thank you for the replies! I'm actually from Canada, and the RTW tickets I THINK are in USD. I've just ordered the lonely planet southeast asia book, very excited to start getting more ideas and details. As for europe, I did western europe last year so I'm thinking either going Czech, Hungary, Greece or just working in Greece for a bit. Not quite sure.

I have a cousin from India and I'm trying to convince her and my mom to meet me there, we'll see, but that would be pretty cool! I am a little nervous to do India by myself....what are the accomodations like? Hostels or Hotels? Reply to this

I have that too. Very useful, since it has so many countries in one book.

Dont rely on getting a job in Greece. You might get lucky, but consider it a bonus rather than something which would fund any travels.

I have been in India 3 times. The accomodation varies quite a lot. If you are staying in the cheapest places(usually less than 5 Euros per night), choose the ones listed in the Lonely Planet book, because they are usually the ones with a better safety reputation. If you want to choose more expensive ones, you can get some really nice places for 20 to 30 Euros per night. How clean the accomodation is varies a lot too. It is useful to take your own sheets, for when the beds are not so clean. A bit of a pain to have to carry them on a world trip, but maybe you could buy them before arriving in India and then give them away to beggars before leaving. Or else you could take a light weight travel sheet.

There was a thread a while ago about how much the Round the World tickets cost. I will try to find it and post it here. Reply to this

There are so many threads about Round the World tickets. Here is the search tool, so you can check them out yourself. There are ones about the prices, in there amongst them.
Search for RTW or RTW ticket or Round the World ticket.

Hello! I'm 24 and currently on my around the world trip of a lifetime. I am currently in South East Asia, Xi'an in China to be accurate. I would recommend if you are travelling alone like me, picking up a tour in China is a good idea. It helps to smooth things over.

I chose Intrepid travel, they are really good, it is set up for backpackers and is reasonably priced. They arrange travel in the country and tell you places to go in each city as well as sorting any problems for you. I am also using them for Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and then managing it solo in Australia and New Zealand.

My around the world ticket cost 1400 pounds Reply to this

Looks good Lauren. I hope to get a round the world ticket when I have enough time to use it. Until then, return flights to various destinations. 😊 Reply to this

Hi,

If you look for a budget flight, you will beat easily your RTW ticket. This is the way to do it...

Buy a round-trip Vancouver to Australia on one of the south Asian airline...from Vancouver you will have less choice than from LAX. But have a look at Singapore airline, and a flight that does allow you a stop-over in Singapore. You should be able to find a vancouver-singapore-sydney for less than 1400CAD. You should be able to book an open-jaw for the same price, like arriving in Sydney and departing from Melbourne or Perth. In Australia, you buy one way tickets for pretty cheap...biggest two players are Qantas/Jetstar and Virgin Blue.

Than these days you can find a a Singapore-India flight for less than 400CAD. Have look a SQ, Kingfisher or Jetairways.

In Asia, Airasia is all over the place...most flights one way...if you plan ahead will go for around 50usd one way.

Than I would simply go back home...and find a discount fare to Easter Europe. I know it is a little more flying, and you won't enjoy the joy to declare that you did indeed do a round-the-world...but hey, it will be a lot cheaper than a RTW.

Hope this help,
