Need Advice - Has anyone done this and can help?

Hello travellers,

I'm 22 and looking to go travelling around Europe whilst working for 1+. I want to start by grape picking in France in September but want to do it on a shoestring. I know of APCON but they charge 99 euros for the registration fee and I cant see why I need to pay that! Does anyone have any experience of grape picking without going through APCON? Or is anyone interested in doing this as well and is looking for a travel buddy like me?

Would be grateful of any help!

Tammy

Hey Tammy

Your in the same situation as me, although i have spent the last two years in retail following graduation and have decided this summer is finally the year i leave :D

I too have looked into working my way around Europe. Picking fruit, especially grapes, will be a good source of income to extend the travelling.

After starting in France then going into either Switzerland or Germany, i have also looked into picking olives in Greece around November or December. There is definitely some options open for travel and fruit picking.

There is also the chance to work in Holland with their flower production. I feel there is a chance of working from September til March at least, but ofcourse with some luck!

Send me a private message if you like.

Good luck. Reply to this

Picking Olives in Greece afterwards sounds like a good idea, I hadnt heard about that.

I've heard that its hard to find work in Germany because they have high unemployment, just something I read in one of those travel&work books. Are you thinking of grape picking there and in Switzerland too?

Hello

It is certainly something i have considered, i have also considered going north into scandanavia. It would be a great adventure working your way across Europe.

I am, however, very concerned about not getting work as i feel the competition (like you have pointed out in Germany) may cause a few problems along the way.

I have also explored the avenue of teaching English in Asia.

Both options have there +'s and -'s

Do you have any ideas what you would do after you finished fruit picking?

Thanks

Hello ingridstar

"i will be going on the train with my bicycle, rucksak, tent, down to dover-calais" thats sounds brilliant.

Good luck with that.

I am 50/50 whether to try and make my way around Europe or head to Asia and teach English.

Both are exciting options! Reply to this

I have been thinking of buying a bike when Im France as a) I dont actually own a bike here and b) im travelling by plane to get to Nice. Booked my flights yay! Yeah Im going to take a tent it gives you more freedom to go where you want/not worry about money to stay places. I think I am going to go with ANPE and pay the 99euros as at least I know I will get paid work there and as Im not fluent in French I dont think id have much luck finding work on my own to begin with. When are you planning to go Ingridstar? have you looked at the WWOOFING option? that what im doing to start with.
